Chirpy - sorry to hear about poppy. As to Ohs snoring, get him to mention it to the GP if it's bad enough to keep you in separate rooms. I nagged my DH to go and he was sent to the sleep clinic for investigations....turns out he has severe sleep apnoea and was stopping breathing around 50 times an hour. He now has a cpap machine to wear over night and it's fab! (sleep apnoea has so many nasty side effects too as well as being potentially fatal, so get him checked)

Dd1 has been happily cleaning out the fire and relaying it for me, she's enjoying it ( daft child) she's also decided to knit her own scarf for the snowy weather so joined knitting club at school! Winter prep is rubbing off on her at last!

Very blowy overnight here too - temp is 12 degees but wind chill takes that down to 'very chilly'(technical metereological term!). Very woried about the tarpaulin I struggled to get over my shed/studio roof last month - already some of the roofing nails I used have ripped out and I dont know what I will do if it goes as no money to get it properly fixed and the neighbour who is a roofer never turned up to help and you dont like to ask again do you?
Have had dehumidifier on for over 24 hours now and humidity is just overing around 54% - I think this means the room is qiute damp - am I right humidity experts?
All I have done today is a bit of cleaning and shuffling stuff aound - daughter ome in 3 weeks for Xmas and I have been sleeping in her room since she left in Sept so thats going to mean a big switch around. I hate my bedroom so much I just havent been going into it except to grab clothes. It faces north, feels pepetually damp and has a blue carpet - I hate blue - it makes me feel SO depressed when used in home decor. Of course cant afford to eplace and have missed 2 on freecycle in the last fortnight - may be reduced to jus having boards in the end BUT will that be colder and draftier I ask myself? Sometime I really with I had a part-time OH to talk these things though with....
tugrin I know what you mean about north facing being cold. IMHO I would not remove the blue carpet until you can replace it with something - maybe you could place a wanted ad on freecycle/freegle for a red carpet or a large piece of carpet (not blue) or some laminate -or rugs- you would be surprised what you might get offered -or even some of the carpet shops - I have a friend whose husband has a carpet shop and when they have to replace a carpet in an office or hotel or any business she says there is often nothing wrong with it but still gets dumped!
failing that try the charity shops for rugs/ curtains in warmer colours - and lay the rugs on top of the blue for now -it wouldnt matter if they were different patterns but all shades of red for instance

some nice bright cushions on your bed - a decent sized lightbulb and a cosy coloured lampshade - try to make everything esle look cosy and you will soon forget the blue - cosy terracotta/peach/sunny yellow would brighten it up.

what about some cheap throws over the bed/chair/headboard to give a different look - the red asda one at approx £2 is a good warm colour

maybe even just re-arrange it a bit -and bring in some of your favourite ornaments from elsewhere - you need to feel comfortable using your bedroom or every night will be unpleasant - you have time before your daughter comes home to do a transformation and it doesnt have to cost an arm an a leg

oooooooooooooooooooo sorry didnt mean to lecture you there - hope it might give you food for thought
    toots xx
    Peace will be mine

When my DS moved into his flat he had a 'school' blue carpet in his room which he hated and made it feel cold too. It was Hessian backed and he turned it over.
The natural colour was warmer but it was harder on the feet but a few rugs placed along walking path from door to bed sorted that out.
Because of a couple of alcoves/fireplace it didn't fit perfectly but he placed cardboard on those bits and put furniture over them,
    Could that work for you?
  • CHIRPY sorry to hear abbout ur furry friend, our hamster was squeaking yesterday he does it often not distressed or anything just likes to make a squeaky noise now and again! Sounds like a teddys squeaker! Just wanted to say books generally send well on Amazon, just click on 'sell yours' and enter isbn number, you can see how much others are priced at and decide how much to sell yours, its easier than fleabay, no photos needed, you dont pay any fees unless it sells and amazon tell you what you will pay and what you will get. I havent posted for ages but am so very grateful for this thread and tips and advice for getting me organised ready for winter, it has turned out its got me ready for illness and I have relied on my supplies and stocks. Sinus surgery due next monday but am fighting another infection this time 'lymph node in neck' it feels like i have a lump (which of course it is!) that aches, I have another sinus infection but am well used to those continually. Recent MRI showed all tubes are blocked ,nose, eyes cheeks, polyps, cartlidge and old infections and anything else they find up there need to be cut away and sucked out then they widen the tubes. My nose isnt small I did mention to the surgeon I lost keys in 86'!!
I had a couple of fits which are caused by the pressure, had planned to work up to next friday but have been off all last week and not going this week, hoping to get over this and be ready for surgery. Am self emplyed to have lost 2 weeks money, will lose 2 weeks after op then its xmas break so wont return to work till Jan, really appreciate DH working every hour he can I feel bad letting people down though.
I am not looking forward to the bit after, the pain! 3 children,Christmas and an op not ideal but it really does need sorting asap. I have been selling on ebay and managed to buy most of the kids stuff, just got to get a 'main' pressie DH will get those, wont be massive items as we are hoping to have a holiday next yr.
I have nearly used all the loo roll & wash powder stash! Will try do a Costco run this week. My winter boots came from cotton traders and I love them, already stuck them by back door. Been wearing them feeding/cleaning out rabbits they are so warm!
Got loads of logs ready and 2 bags of coal, I never did find a bunker or anywhere to put a coal delivery, will just get a bag now and then, we dont have the fire on much, heating stays on 17 deg at night then 18 when we are up, 17 whilst everyone at wrk and school then 18 again in evening. Its been so mild again! Way too hot in living room with fire lit.
Having mild panic about getting rest of winter stuff and christmas stuff/easy meals for freezer/cakes and biccys made,,before my op, basically everything I would normally do but do it NOW although DH isnt stressed at all, he just says dont worry it will all get sorted. Famous last words, am sure next week I really wont be bothered if the kids have chippy for tea every night or everything isnt ticked of my (ocd) lists! But for now it seems to matter. Am looking forward to reading this thread whilst I recover ;-)

Aw guys what brilliant ieas about my ideous bedroom - tooti NOT a lecture ust plain good old fasioned sensible-ness! The ideas about the carpet shop is fab as there is one in my local town that do big refits but I had only thought of the ends of rolls they sell (and of course no money) - I will def try them. If not the idea of turning it over sounds like a compromise for now and the backing would stop the rugs rucking up. I dont really understand Facebook ( suppose I dont really approve as its caused my DD a lot of heartache) but I can certainly try freecycle groups again with a wanted. THANKS peeps - I will get it sorted before DD comes back so I can move back in there with grace!
temp here down to 4 - wind has stopped completely and sky clear so frost I think tonight. Hottie in bed and a warm milk methinks.

Tugrin - if you do get some carpet from freegle/freecycle, remember you can always get rid of the old stuff on there. Maybe your DD can help you do a makeover when she gets home? If you can get some paint on freegle as well, and give the room a good clean, air it and give it a lick of paint and come nice cushions or a throw as toots suggested.

is there anything you can reuse from elsewhere in the house? My parents can't afford to redecorate or replace curtains etc so my mum tends to move the furniture from room to room, and remake big curtains for smaller rooms as the edges go :)

As for the damp feeling, you know what I'm going to say... Dehumidifier :D if you can't afford to buy one, can you borrow one?

First frost last night, so have made an effort to get on with my curtain poles... Two are sanded and washed so need to dry before I can paint them, and one is washed and drying ready to sand. I have also chopped some more logs, and am about to lag some pipes that I noticed when the electrician took the floorboards up... Need to do it before he nails them back down :)

    Hello MrsLw

Well I finally bubblewrapped my back door much to the amusement of a friend who visited who must think I am quite bonkers :D

Bizzarely it seems to give more light... You know that brightness you get on snow days.... a bit like that! So I have decided to paint the will opposite the door white to bounce even more light into the kitchen. Can't wait to get a long net curtain/voile up there to hide the bubblewrap before someone else comes over and sees it!!!
