you might like We'll Eat Again by Marguerite Patten i actually have a 3 book set that includes this book but it has genuine recipes from WWII, she worked for the Ministry of Food back then if i remember correctly

Thanks I have a few of her books, dating from my single days, when I first moved from home in the 1970's I still use them, bit tatty from use over the years but still readable, and dare I admit it prefer her recipes to Delia and all the other modern cooks

  • Our Local Council has decided that they will give out 2500 snow shovels and 2500 3 litre salt bags to volunteers in the borough who will clear snow and ice from the pavements, drives and front door access for elderly residents in their street. I think I might get one and do nextdoor and up the street. I already clear the bottom of the road with my other neighbour using the grit bin we have been given, so an extra few yards wouldnt matter and might help the carers get in without hurting themselves. I think this is a brilliant idea and hope other areas are doing the same. So even our council are expecting a hard winter!

    Hi Gang

Just wanted to report in that my Coopers of Stortford delivery arrived on Tuesday. I ordered the "Car Snow Kit" on 17th October, emailed them on 9th November enquiring where it was, received a reply on the 10th saying "Sorry, we are out of stock but will get new stock next week" and a dispatch note last Friday. I haven't actually seen the goods yet so can't report on the quality (I'm working away this week so it was delivered to my husband's work).

I think it is possible that they got rather overwhelmed after they were originally mentioned on this thread and couldn't cope with the volume of orders - for every poster here, there must be at least 5 or 10 lurkers.

On a separate note, after getting caught in snow storms during each of the last five winters, I ordered snow chains via Amazon from Cooks Motor Spares in Chesham last week. Their customer service was fantastic. I had to email them with a few questions (i.e. which set of chains did I need for my tyre size?), and they replied within minutes. The chains were delivered within 24 hours of me placing the order, too. Total cost inc P&P £40.95. (I'd originally gone to C*stco for chains, but they didn't stock my car's size.) Guess this guarantees it won't snow in the Home Counties for a few years now, not until I buy a car that needs a different size of chains.

totally agree with others about warm natural fibres - I splashed out on really wool tights last year and theyare so warm - I got some wool, some wool and angora and some wool and cashmere. Worth every penny. Same with my sheepskin slippers.

  • Thanks for the bubble wrap tip, I have done now bathroom, back door, downstairs toilet, hubbys bedroom ( two outside walls same as bathroom) so from outside just looks as if we have put frosted glass in and as high as I can on side window - will see if hubby can do highest 3, all our windows are made up with the small panes, look lovely but annoying to clean and as found today annoying to bubble wrap, My bedroom window is made up with 4 small panes one on top of another at side and bigger window made up with 6 panes bottom and 6 panes top, so do want to see out a bit so have bubble wrapped just the middle big window. I have run out of bubble wrap so will have to see if can pick some up as still want to do kitchen windows - they look over back garden and study, again looks over back garden. I am not sure about living room.

Can anyone tell me what is the best way to close up the vent or what ever its called on the big window, I have shut it but still lots of noise coming through it. Never usually even close it, but today for some reason, powers that be have decided to put traffic lights just before the roundabout about 250 yrds away and now instead of traffic whizzing past we have a nice line of traffic waiting for lights to change, bad enough usually during rush hours, but now the noise of all the cars sitting there with engines on is driving me nuts and that is with double glazing, but can hear the noise loudly through the vent, well only a thin bit of plastic keeping air out. As what ever I use will be hidden by nets any suggestions would be great.

Garden apart from fruit bushes, and need to finish clearing pots from the area in back still to come ( email from the company yesterday saying they were picking raspberries from the last week) has now been settled for winter, the guy who does the heavy work for me came this morning, cut the grass I hope for last time this year, don't think I have ever had it cut in November before and this is second time this month, as was done a fortnight ago and had grown 3 ins, not quite as fast as usual but still a lot and all my hedges are now in place, fingers cross they take. I was right 100 was just the right amount, phew was worried I had miscalculated. Gardener told me that a few places where he has been working this week actually have daffodils coming up, they must think we are skipping winter, mine so far are still below ground and no sign of an spring flowers at moment anyway.

I just added a cheap butterfly can opener to my next shopping list. If you normally use an electric can opener its worth buying one of these for power-cut emergencies; mrT value one is about 36p but there are loads around for less than £1

I would buy two as I had one break once, the turning part came off, so I always now make sure I have two in, I actually have also the really old fashioned ones that sawed the tins, hopefully never use it but nothing can fall off it, so just a back up.
