Biobulbs - does everyone use the branded ones and do you know of any good deals? I think I need to get some as it's been so miserable. Whoever mentioned the damp is right too. The dehumidifier is on and currently getting half a tank of water a day. I'm sure it makes it feel colder.

This is the one I have bought
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Ecozone-Biobulb-Energy-Saving-Daylight-Bayonet/dp/B000F5FNXE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1321473218&sr=8-1

    - got two so far - slowly will buy more, cheapest I could find that were actual biobulbs, but someone might know of somewhere cheaper. Remember if you do buy them from Amazon go through nectar to collect your points, I will not be forgetting now I know - just ordered a book there and found it being sold for someone for 1p ( Amazons own price £14.99) plus the usual £2.80 postage for market place books but still made sure I went out after searching for it and back in through nectar, might only be 2 points but they will all add up :rotfl: The book I ordered is Thrifty Tips from the War Years, someone on another thread -' really old style living' - and thought it sounded good. Am actually going to ( one of these weeks) live off rations just to see how we find the meals. It will I hope show me how little we can get by on but still eat healthily if needs must - like a very prolonged period of bad weather, or prices go so high we have to cut back even more, so the more info I collect the better.

having been blessed with a face for radio i am sort of used to look somewhat odd :rotfl:)

Fantastic description of me - and I'm sure it does NOT apply to you Splodger. Like another poster recently - sorry can't remember who - my :rotfl:top layer is rather large so I can get lots of warm layers underneath. Today for example I am the jolly red giant

I agree re wool for winter with silk underneath for comfort and cotton for summer And socks in bed for winter - they make a real difference to a good night's sleep. I love modern materials like fleece but just for top layers - natural materials can be heavy when layered and a light warm fleece is the perfect top layer.

I have no confidence in MyHermes at all. Both times the courier who delivers for them to my specific house (which is numbered like anyone elses house is) has delivered them to a house somewhere else where he thinks mine is, without looking at the number of the house he is delivering to. He is very obviously lazy and just trying to finish his round regardless. I have complained no end of times about this to MyHermes but they are not interested. I am a business owner and would NEVER risk my business using MyHermes. I also ask anyone who I buy from (on Ebay) to NEVER use MyHermes. Just go to GOOGLE & look at the Blogs on MyHermes that people have written about their experiences.

I'm not surprised your annoyed, I would be too if they had misdelivered twice.
I think it's unfair for you to assume the reason was "He is very obviously lazy and just trying to finish his round regardless" rather than the courier made a mistake. It could also be an office error, incorrect address etc.
It's human nature to vent if you've had a bad experience but all delivery companies have large amounts of complaints, just google (company name)+ complaint of any company.
I once did this when another member posted Hermes had more complaints than other companies and sad as I am counted, listed and posted and it wasn't true.

Nothing to do with your complaint Candychris but more to do with a measure of complaints.
If 2 of my new customers had posted on a blog or complaint forum about me recently as their courier, it would be in the count of Hermes delivery courier failure(considering the messages stated I was a useless and lazy courier).
Why did they consider me useless and lazy because they didn't read their t&c's for delivery, they expected to have their delivery at xx time 6pm or later or collect from my home because they work.
It wouldn't be measured against 1000 happy reasonable customers though.

On the upside I love this thread and have followed some great tips, thank you all. Only managed to stock up on food and line my curtains so far.

Remember you cannot be expected to fully prepare in a few weeks or even months unless you have plenty of funds available. You are doing well to have stocks in and curtains lined. A great start, now have you a way of cooking said food if no electric or gas? Or what can you do for lighting, heat? They are things you need to consider next, ( mind you that is only my view you most likely have different priorities hopefully never to be used but you never know - as posted the other day last weekend lots of people just over the water from me were without gas for a few days due to a burst pipe, water got into the gas pipe, certainly brings it home how we can be hit by unexpected loss of utilities and winter always brings more than usual.

I know am lecturing again, better shut up.:rotfl:

  • I am guessing the bubble side should go against the window, as you will get a layer of air trapped not only in the bubbles but between them, but I don't know the 'science part'.

    Thanks,this sounds right!

I just added a cheap butterfly can opener to my next shopping list. If you normally use an electric can opener its worth buying one of these for power-cut emergencies; mrT value one is about 36p but there are loads around for less than £1
... don't throw the string away. You always need string! :D

  • Sorry I haven't checked in for a bit. Have been very busy at work as of late. Pretty well stocked for foodstuff and personal needs. Have wood in and Cmas almost complete too. Bad news is that OH unemployment checks (redundancy cheques?) have stopped now so it is only my income to keep us afloat. Have been working extra when available to keep us on track. Despite the loss of OH income, I still consider myself blessed. We have a little bit set aside so that we can meet our bills for the time being and my pantries and freezer are packed as full as they can be. We are cozy with full tummies:) and thats all that matters at this point.
  • Haven't posted on the thread for a while but have been popping in to see how everyone is :)

Winter prep wise, I think I've pretty much done all I can for now. As the nights are getting colder I'm having to work out my most effective clothing combos and efficient heating methods.

I walk to work, at quite a pace and arrive too hot and icky if I really wrap up on a morning :rotfl:but walking home is a lot colder. I've found that packing gloves, hat and neckwarmer covers this for now rather than having to carry bulky coats. Once we get freezing temps my lovely big coat will come out though.:)

At home, I've used my convector heater only a few times to take the chill off the air. My elec fan heater in the bedroom gets a 5 min blast just before I go to bed. I've compared my electricity usage for the last month with the same period last year, it's 61% lower! (last year I got into a bad habit of falling asleep on the sofa with the convector on + blankets and waking up at 2am absolutely cooking - I remember one time hanging out of the window to cool down, I was in such a hot panic!! :o )

Food stocks are ok, plenty of salt and screenwash in, bought some spare magic gloves for DDs (50p from market). Still looking for ski type gloves for them for when it snows - think I found some in Home Bargains last year, but haven't seen any yet.
