Anyone had/having a black or completly coloured dress?
When I first got engaged my first thought was black and dark red dress, then I thought midnight blue, then I thought a dark purple and now I just don't know.
What are peoples opnions on having a black or coloured wedding dress? Is it something that depends on the venue you choose?

I think they can look amazing, but they can also look very 'statement' (goth, alternative, hippie, medieval re-enactment) which is also great, but only REALLY works if you go all the way with the whole theme. Also - quite often these dresses (and themed weddings) can date rapidly. Are you SURE that for the rest of your life you want to look back on an alternative wedding? If you are - then go for it! it'll be awesome!
Personally, though I really considered a coloured non-traditional dress, I eventually went for a very 'normal' style, and chose champagne/pale gold instead of white or ivory. In the end, I wanted to be able to look back on my wedding pictures and have them be 'timeless' - both in terms of history, and in terms of who I am at various points in my life. I loooove the alternative lifestyle - but will i still want to live that when i'm in my 40s, raising kids, working for a promotion at work? hmmmn...Life on a shoestring!0 -
Most wedding photographs that are ten years old or older, tend to look dorkish. (You should see ours).
Go for what you want now. It will all be the same in a few years time.I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.0 -
And alternative view here:I got married last Friday and wore an olive green dress. White just washes me out. This dress made my skin tone look wonderful, and I felt very alive & happy in it. Every one loved it.
Wedding pictures always date - looking at family who married 20 yrs ago in trad, white frocks, they all look very dated. I personally love living in the 'here and now', and doing what I love now, not trying to second guess who I might be or what I might want in 20 yrs.
But then we also didn't care about 'official photos' either. Instead we already have many of the wonderful informal pics from friends. And it is there for milenia now: our utter happiness and me in a nice frock that is part of who I am now.I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days attack me at once0 -
If you want a colour dress and feel its you then go for it, definately.
Wedding tastes and trends change over the years anyway so I personally dont think you would look back and think they are dated in the sense of your choice of dress. I think you should go for a colour dress (if its what you want) rather than look back at your photos and say 'that isnt me at all in these photos'. If your going to feel you and feel comfortable and happy then go for whatever style and colour dress you want.:D0 -
Sorry - i didn't mean to make such a negative post - i jest meant to say: think about it carefully - if you still want it - then do it!Life on a shoestring!0

It's your wedding do it how you want to!
Dunno if you've seen these but thought I'd show them while I was here:
Both are designed by a wedding dress designer called Donna Lee Designs.

Personally, I was happy with the excuse to wear a big white wedding dress. But if I wanted to get married in black, midnight blue or neon yellow I'd have just done it and who cares what anyone thinks.
Try ringing round a few bridal shops and asking if they also have a collection of bridal dresses in colours other than shades of white and ivory. If they say yes (because they will) ask them roughly how many and what colours... So you don't turn up and they've just got one in rose pink and one in red!!
Once you try dresses on you'll get a feel for what makes you feel great!I found looking at pictures online wasn't helpful at all for what suited me best.

I banged on for ages about having a dark purple dress, there'll be posts from me from a while ago saying I was having one. But then I got sidetracked and have ended up having silver instead. So still not traditional white/ivory but not the bold colour. But I did have times when I had wobbles over whether my silver would just be boring grey and wishing I had gone with purple, though now I think the silver looks perfect and probably more 'bridey' than the purple might have done (and of course has the advantage of having been made by Linda
). But if you want colour then go for it. As for the photos dating...well my photos of my first wedding at the end of the 80s show a traditional ivory dress, lots of puffiness and lace and flowery headress. I think the ones this time round will be far more timeless than my traditional ones from back then
ETA: If you find yourself 'bottling' the idea of going strong on colour with your dress, going with something like silver or gold is an alternative, and then accessorise with colour. I have amethyst jewellery and cadbury purple shoes that exactly match my BM dress0 -
