Opinions on black/coloured wedding dresses

  • Two words: Do it. :D

Seriously, if you want a coloured or black dress because it's more 'you', then who's to say you have to fit in with the 'done thing'?

Besides, the white wedding dress tradition was only made popular by Queen Victoria who got married in white, not just to signify purity, but because white (ie undyed) fabric was a lot cheaper and she wanted to show that she would not be frivolous.

If you're looking for inspiration, try offbeatbride.com - it's full of brides who are having their wedding their way, some completely off the wall, others just making sure that they are injecting something of themselves into it.

Depending on the style you want, look at bridesmaid dresses, prom dresses, ballgowns etc. Or go for custom-made.

Get out there and try as many dresses on as you want to....somewhere along the process you will feel comfortable with one and if thats a coloured one then so be it....

I married quite a few years ago when the fashion was very much ivory...but I wore pink...not shocking but with a definate colour ...I didnt set out to buy a coloured dress but it was the one i fell in love with once I got it on...
I loved my dress and it made me feel good wearing it...as long as you love it and you feel good in it ,you shouldn't worry what colour it is....

  • Aaaah Brighton Belle, just like me, Olive Green!!! When I was little I used to tell my Mum that I would get married in Green, and she used to say don't be stupid!!! Apparently in Victorian times (no I'm not THAT old) Brides wore various colours, not usually white, and green was scorned as it was supposed to mean you were a loose woman, Green = rolling around on the grass!!!LOL!! You should go with whatever YOU want, don't let ANYONE tell you what to wear, good luck!!

  • I'mk so glad they're are so many other people who don't want big white wedding dresses! I've always wanted a baby blue dress and always get a bit of funny look when I mention this....
  • We're getting married in May & Im wearing an all black dress as my OH wanted to wear white. To start with I was quite upset with him for this, but when I went and tried some dresses on I found none were really 'me'. So I ordered one from Ebay for £31, it arrived & I love it :D It is much more 'me'.
If you want to wear black then go for it, at the end of the day you need to be comfortable and happy. I will say, I've had a few people who have responded badly when I say I'm wearing black, but thats their problem. If they don't like it, then they dont have to come :A

  • I say, go for what you are happy with. :D Personally, I will be over 40 when I get married next year and I am just not convinced that a white/ivory wedding dress is going to suit me. I have been thinking about going for something like this instead. (Hope I can post the link!)

  • I got married in a black wedding dress, I didn't want to look like a clone bride in white like everyone else, thats just not me. I loved the colour black as a kid and always said when I was little that I would get married wearing black.

I made sure that I warned the vicar and family (oh and the photographer) that the dress was going to be black - everyone was really supportive.

I found it quite hard to find a black wedding dress in my local wedding dress shops, rather than a prom/ bridesmaid dress. I only was able to try one black wedding dress (which I didn't like) The dress I choose I could only try on in red and I then had to order the black to me made for me (as it was a special order I had to pay upfront - £1000) I was a bit scary spending so much money and not knowing what the dress was going to look like. But it was lovely, didn't look goth or medival just looked like a black wedding dress.

Something I wish I had thought about was the petticoat thingy, the shop hired me was white - I wish I had, got a black one - I think I was the only one who noticed anyway.

Something else to consider is that choosing a black wedding dress is going to affect the choice of colours for the groom. My hubby choose a cream suit.
  • I am going to be wearing purple and black goth-ish dress. I am thinking of having bridesmaids in white... role switch kinda thing! No idea what colour hubby to be is gonna wear though!

I say go for it!! It is one day, where you need to feel comfortable in what you wear. As for looking back at photos- I wanna be able to look back and think, good on ya, for doing what you wanted to do!
