Didn't rate Darjeeling myself either. Is it based on a book at all? I could see what they were trying to do and it almost moved me in the river scene and following. There was some beautiful scenery, but there was something missing, the characters didn't ring true either. There was laughing at some scenes in Manchester but I couldn't find anything to make me laugh out loud. Why did the little guy have no shoes on for the whole film? And why did they have that mini-film at the beginning? Just colour me puzzled.Just looking to save a few pennies here and there0

just came back from darjeeling, and yeah i loved it...
the general consensus from the friends i went with was that it would be a really really awesome film for the kinda person who loves slow and peculiar comedies...
i didn't really get the royal tenenbaum's myself - it just seemed weird - but this is an improvement without compromising the taste to Anderson's films...
first off, the story was really touching - with a brother and sister myself who i'm not really that close to, it was resonant. Then it had a good mix of funny peculiar and funny ha ha - little details like in the short story at the beginning were brilliant - e.g. the opening shot of the guy's feet, corpse-like, as on the TV behind him three corpses are shown in the same position! On the other hand there were some laugh out loud bits like the mace - that brought the house down...
i think the key to the film's success is to be taken in by its charm
Visually it was fantastic - India was definitely a great colourful setting (yeah i know its cliched) - and i loved the slow-mo pan across effect used several times (i know quite a lot of people would lose their patience!) - you've got to say though that it was excellent when they all threw their suitcases to the ground...
Of course it was all focused on the brothers - everything was a metaphor for them and their relationship (including mr murray)
i loved all three of the characters (a bit biased since i'm already a fan of wilson and schwartzman)
the short film (in reply to meanmanc) was first, useful for some background info, second it really made the ending that much more effective.Haikus are easy
But sometimes they don't make sense

Darjeeling was a complete bore.... Sorry! Me and my husband were yawning and could have walked out early!

I saw Darjeeling tonight too. I wouldn't say it was boring, it held my attention, but more for the scenery and set etc than the story. It was moving in parts, made me smile a few times and snigger once or twice. The couple sitting along from me must have been watching a different film judging from the very loud hysterics they were in all the way through it!
I didn't really get what the first short film was all about, the main film certainly didn't need it. Got the feeling they were trying too hard to do the arty farty thing.
Just my opinion, glad others enjoyed it.0
