WARNING ! AVAST IS ACTUALLY MALWARE IN A STUFFED SHIRT !.................................................
....................SERIOUSLY - Do not go near Avast with a long-handled barge pole is my advice.

Unless you really want the equivalent of MALWARE popping up every time you use your online bank.
Each to his own. I've been successfully using the free version of Avast for years without problem. The nag screens are just a minor irritant, easily ignored. :)
  • ^^^ Me too. It sounds like the Irritant works for a rival av company.

  • I bought a new HP laptop and as the McAfee trial was about to expire decided to pay for a year's subscription to McAfee Livesafe. Big mistake. I took the laptop back to PC World who said it was malware blocking the internet but it was not covered by the warranty and so would cost £50 to repair. I went back to McAfee who said that PC world were wrong and there was no Malware.. After 30 mins on the phone to 4 different technicians on a bad line to India, they told me it was my internet provider at fault (despite the fact I had another PC up and running fine). After an internet search of the problem, we found it's quite common and we found a page from McAfee themselves saying how to fix the problem of the internet being taken out by their software. Shame their technicians didn't know about this solution. In the end, we fixed it ourselves by: uninstalling McAfee and switching on alternative virus protection, then doing a system restore, which cost nothing.

Two basic mistakes....Using McAfee and asking PCWorld/Currys to sort anything.
Still you have at least used the experience to learn something and will, hopefully, be able to pass on the knowledge no you have it....
    Glad you have it fixed.

Seconded. Pleased you sorted it out, though.
  • Glad you sorted this out, but you should not have had to go through that. The uncertainty about what's going on when software malfunctions kills me.

  • I wrote my original post in a somewhat agitated state, I'll admit. But I'm just an ordinary punter. I don't work for anyone. AVAST have contacted me to apologise for the inconvenience caused. No explanation was offered of the malfunction of their software and my warning stands. No-one is gonna come between me and my money and get away with it, and that's that.
