    YES! They had.

He's not only driving without a licence, but without insurance as a result.

Are you serious? I think you need to recalibrate your sarcasm detectors if you are.

Hint: While the licence does expire at 70, so long as you can satisfy the DVLA that you are still medically fit to drive, you can carry on driving. I don't know the exact procedure since I've still got plenty of time left but I think it just needs a letter from your GP or something like that.

Unless your licence includes buses or HGV I thought it was just a matter of you confirming you were still medically fit to drive. No doctors involved.

I chose my words carefully, "satisfy the DVLA that you are still medically fit". I have no idea what the actual requirements to do that are. If it's simply a case of writing "I can still see, LOL" on a bit of paper and sending it off with your driving licence then so be it.

You were the one who responded to comments about licences expiring at 70, with "Somebody better tell my Dad, he's still driving at 85".
Better to say what you mean, than mean what you say.

No I wasn't, that was Gloomendoom. My dad hasn't even reached retirement age!

So you do not only say what you mean, you have an opinion about what you don't know about.
You fill in a form to apply for renewal of licence, confirming you are still able to pass the driving test criteria re. vision etc.
No letters, no LOL notes, no doctors letters.
Just the form, and two photographs for the new ID card type licence if you still have the paper type licence.

So the original point, that it is perfectly possible to drive after 70, is in fact correct then?

I didn't bother to contact them in case they left my case. It happened to someone I know.
    You took a risk.
    It didn't pay off.
You will have to take the points.

Even if you are 'in the right' and have some justification for not following up, you will be fighting a losing battle if you try and take it to court or keep appealing. The system is designed with the belief that all drivers are evil scum, it would be best to just pay up, take the points, and get on with your life.

Hang on a minute. If the offence took place in April, and the OP has now received correspondence to say she must pay a fixed penalty, I'm thinking that she has 28 days to respond to this. A summons cannot be issued while a fixed penalty is on the table, so it may have timed out by the time the 28 days is up.

OP, what is the date of the offence, and have you now received a conditional offer of fixed penalty, requiring a response in 28 days? If so, what is the date of the offer? The points on a ghost licence won't mean much to you, but you may be able to save the cost of the penalty.
