Ex-employer taking ages to provide a reference????

No - I am saying that this statement in a dismissal letter isn't a legally binding contract, and that is the last correspondence on this issue I will have with you. The OP can believe who they want but I do not correspond with trolls, and especailly not ones who use the personal grief of bereaved posters to have sly digs at other posters who haven't even posted. You are a nasty piece of work having fun misadvising and misleading people for your own entertainment, and it's just as well that we are all out of your reach or you might pours drinks over us.
im sorry you actually said
An employer is never obliged to provide a reference
and that is the point i was picking you up on.
as regards the dismissal letter thats a seperate issue.0 -
Employers are not legally obliged to provide a reference, if their policy says they will provide a basic one and then they dont, legally theres nothing that can be done.
If I were the original poster i would ask the former employer nicely again if they would please supply the reference as I was wishing to move on now in life etc. If they wont then the only thing is to provide other alternatives.0 -

its not only their policy, they have given this man a written assurance that they will!
he has and is within his rights to pursue the matter.0 -

he is well within his rights to continually pursue the matter with the employer.
presumably until they get fed up and give him what he needs.1 -

But have both companies approached your employer direct?
That is what I was trying to find out - whether you are expecting to get a piece of paper in your hand which amounts to a testamonial or whether the reference would be sent direct to the other companies.
Wherever I have worked in the past references have been collected by one company writing or phoning the other, not for the employee to be postman.0 -

I guess the threat of the dismissal 'leaking' makes him fear the new employer going to the old one. And understandably so0 -

Yes they call the company, and my ex-employer told them that they were sending the reference. Now it has been 2-3 weeks and they havn't sent it in yet.0 -
