Ex-employer taking ages to provide a reference????

I have recentley picked up two jobs (see other threads) and on my dismissal letter (unfair dismissal may I add) it says "we can provide you with a basic reference" I asked for one and she said she would provide it (this is for one of the jobs not got that far with the other yet).
Me and my dad went down on tuesday and she said she would post it that night, come friday she still hasn't done it. She is taking forever and I am wanting to start work ASAP. I have been waiting for the reference to be done now for 3 weeks... she only has to put dates and job title down.
Any idea's what I can do

Nothing. They are under noobligation to provide a reference, you have reminded several times, I don't think it is going to happen.Debt free 4th April 2007.

Yes but she said she would and the only thing stopping me is this reference I can start as soon as I receive it.
Is there anyone else I can use as a reference then?0 -

show the letter that was written to you. its your right to ask for a reference in light of this.0 -

Is a dismissal letter legally binding? I need one for the agency I am with and one for the care home. I could understand if she had to write great big long letters but she just has to put my name, job title, start date,end date. How hard is that?0 -
Are you looking for a piece of paper signed by your previous employer which you can show to your new employer?
That isn't worth very much (if anything) to your new employer!
What they should want is a letter direct to them from your previous employer. To get that they (the new employer) needs to contact your former employer. Have they requested that?0 -
Legally...NOT!!... So an employer can be fined or go to jail for not providing a reference...I don't think so. It's a civil matter. If the ex employer changes their mind and does not wish to provide a reference (despite saying a basic one would be provided) then nothing can be done.
when i say legally i mean their refusal can be challenged in the civil courts.0 -

You state the wording as we can provide, not we will provide, or are obliged to provide.Debt free 4th April 2007.

Both companys told me a basic reference would be fine, basic reference is ex-employers company policy0 -

hassle them for it, you arent wrong in continually asking because you have that letter.
until they say 'no we will not do it'
at which point you can take them to court.0
