5p Charge for all carrier bags in Wales

I think that there are many interesting points in this thread, but it would be good to get a little perspective.
It's 5p. It's not like you are being asked to lose a limb.
The idea behind the 5p charge is to encourage you to think about the number of bags that you are using, and to adjust your habits to be more environmentally friendly.
If you need a new, clean bag to carry your £100 coat in, then treat yourself. It's only 5p! And before anyone rants about having to buy 10 bags to carry their food shopping home, guess what - it's only 50p for the lot! If you are on a strict budget, either remember your bags, or put that bar of chocolate back.
Yes but the cost of the bags has already been added to the price of the things you buy. They don't give you "free" bags, they have added the cost of buying them, storing them and distributing them to the stores to the price of the goods they sell.
If they then charge you 5p for the bags you are paying for them twice!
The way I see it is, if you do not use the "free" bags then you are paying for something you have not used. So you should demand 5p back for every one of your own bags you use.0 -

This has drove me mad, it really has, I have just moved back to wales after living in England for the last 4 years and i keep forgetting my bags, I dont mind about the food as such as thats fair enough, but for clothes shopping its awful, I have had to buy bags for new clothes as i refuse to put brand new clothes in old bags. Went into mcdonalds about 2 weeks back and was shocked that they wanted to charge for a little brown paper bag to carry our meals out, I then had hit my patience level and made a stand and went to fetch my husband from the car to help me carry our meals, They all looked at me stupid, But i could not of given a damn. The world as gone mad! You can still order online and have your groceries delivered with bags but they charge you for a paper bag from mcdonalds that is recyclable anyway, Crazy!'There are far better things ahead Than any we leave behind '0

Other people have complained about paper bags too - but the production process used to make paper bags has a big impact on the environment so just because they are recyclable doesn't mean they have less of an impact on the environment than a plastic bagAlways_after_a_bargin wrote: »but they charge you for a paper bag from mcdonalds that is recyclable anyway, Crazy!0 -
I know at work, it costs us £700 for a board of carrier bags. I think there are 70-80k bags on a board.0

also as paper bags weigh far more than plastic they cost far more to transport too.MoneySavingUser wrote: »Other people have complained about paper bags too - but the production process used to make paper bags has a big impact on the environment so just because they are recyclable doesn't mean they have less of an impact on the environment than a plastic bagEating Out of the Storecupboards Challenge.
