My bags for life and smelling !! I keep a couple in my handbag and rinse them out now and then but I wouldn't put clothes in them. Clothes shopping is the worse as I like new clothes to go in nice clean bags and cloth or plastic bags for life don't stay clean long.

I now try on clothes I like in the shops then go home and order on line.

  • Since the 5p charge I've cut down the amount of carriers I use dramatically. I'd already started using bags for life for food shopping anyway. In all fairness if you want to buy clothes and are spending over a tenner is 5p really going to make a huge difference?

I did get a bit panicked the other day when I popped into the supermarket near my parents. I only wanted a handful of items and when they asked if I needed a bag I realised I'd left mine in the car. I hesitated, pulled a face, the cashier looked at me strangely, then I realised I was in England, breathed a sigh of relief and said yes to the bag.:)

I've been using my own bags for food shopping for years and never use little bags for fruit and veg I just put them in loose. When clothes shopping if I had one bag from say Debenhams if big enough I would refuse a bag at another store as I hate accumulating carrier bags.

While 5p is not much for clothes shopping it's the principle. I'm paying the shop anything from £20 to £100 and they want an extra 5p for me to own a bag with their name on it, advertising their store. It sounds petty but it soon adds up

:rotfl: I often pop in Supermarket on my way back from Town in my lunch hour and the amount I buy is now limited by the room I have in my bags.

We always had a supply of bags in our office which before the 5p charge people would pick up on the way out to do some shopping lunch time and return next day but this has stopped now as people hold onto their bags !

Yet another example of how politicians ruin small businesses with their insane and incessant meddling.

If they are the ones from supermarkets that cost 10p, just rip some holes in them and get them replaced:D

I've thought of that but I had my co-op ones in town and no co-op in town. I never have the right bag for life for the shop with me!!

I had a bag a bit like this one here.
    Z

One day, I had a bottle of pop which I didn't screw the lid on level and it leaked. Inside there was a label saying I could put this in the washer at 40C. I put it in at 30c and it SHRUNK by about a third! Not impressed.

I used it to put in clothes to donate to the charity shop.

My Mum has had B4L from Morrisons and M&S replaced at Asda before. Not too sure if they can still do this.

I can still remember the days when EVERY woman owned a shopping bag! at the moment I have three nylon bags in my (rather large, admittedly) handbag. I live in Wales and I have been using these bags for at least two years - used to get funny looks when in large supermarkets and I refused thier carrier bags! Now I get 'well done' and 'good for you'! my bags cost me 50p in Home bargains - they fold up to the size of a spec case and live in my bag and the glove compartment of the car! They go in the washing machine if dirty and its honestly the best 50p Ive spent. I must have saved hundreds of plastic carrier bags!
I remember the olden days - shopping bags were a 'must' and many women got them for christmas pressies! and were grateful for them! and even when I was a child, women still used the wicker baskets with a handle for shopping! no paper bags even - your veg was tipped into your basket/shopping bag!

Asda refused to relace my M & S BFL :(

My best own bag for supermarket shopping is from Iceland. Must be over 5 year old now and is huge and bright orange so I never lose it!

I remember my mother and her shopping bags but new clothes always went in a nice C&A carrier bag :D
