Paying 5p for a bag I can re-use isnt as bad as paying 5p for a MacDonalds bag which smells and is definaltely not re-usable as its oily, that is not something which I think is right.

The tesco bags are rubbish whats the point in using them if you have to double bag because they split so easily. No I dont use them a lot but I forget occasionally to have bags with us 9/10 maybe more I do have bags with us they so much better, not only stronger but you get more in and they dont buckle and stay in shape

There is a way around it. Go drive thru and when you place order they ask if you want a paper bag (cost 5p) say no.

When you get your order your chips will be in brown paper bag and burger handed to you separately. Open chip bag and put in burger. The bag is yours now.

Did also hear that shops can gift you a bag but can't put any shoppiing in it. You can though as if it's a gift it's yours do as you want with.

I was well and truly shocked when I saw the charge on my receipt when I got home! It is outrageous that the customer is not informed that the bags are no longer free. It may have had publicity in Wales but it certainly did not get any outside of it!

Also, I would be curious to know whether the 5p is considered as payment for the bag or as a tax. Can I return my bag and get my 5p back? What if the bag is defective?

I'm in Scotland and was well aware that this charge had come in. It was on the national news at the tme.;)

Since the 5p charge I've cut down the amount of carriers I use dramatically. I'd already started using bags for life for food shopping anyway. In all fairness if you want to buy clothes and are spending over a tenner is 5p really going to make a huge difference?

I did get a bit panicked the other day when I popped into the supermarket near my parents. I only wanted a handful of items and when they asked if I needed a bag I realised I'd left mine in the car. I hesitated, pulled a face, the cashier looked at me strangely, then I realised I was in England, breathed a sigh of relief and said yes to the bag.:)

Tesco in england will start charging for carrier bags shortly. but in my local tesco they couldnt tell me when.

I rarely go to tesco, but one day when I did I put the tesco bags in with my store of bags and when I sorted them out later, the tesco bags had turned into confetti. Took me hours to clear it all up.

I think that there are many interesting points in this thread, but it would be good to get a little perspective.

It's 5p. It's not like you are being asked to lose a limb.

The idea behind the 5p charge is to encourage you to think about the number of bags that you are using, and to adjust your habits to be more environmentally friendly.

If you need a new, clean bag to carry your £100 coat in, then treat yourself. It's only 5p! And before anyone rants about having to buy 10 bags to carry their food shopping home, guess what - it's only 50p for the lot! If you are on a strict budget, either remember your bags, or put that bar of chocolate back.

The problem with plastic bags is not their usage, but how they are disposed of. As long as they are free people will take more than they need and throw them away. I do my best not to take bags, and the ones I do get I then use as bin liners. Maybe if all bags were biodegradable and if shops gave you one free one per £x spent it would be better. Whatever happens someone is not going to be happy.
