  • Congrats on the job front!:j

Not being funny but can you swap your sky from one house to the next - like a phone number/line? If not don't forget to cancel things like this when you move and reopen them when you get to the next address. We have freeview it annoys me to pay on top of the licence fee but we don't go out much and the £2 a week gives us a few more options and is cheaper than renting a dvd.
Other half is currently giving up smoking, we don't qualify for any help and he just cannot get to the clinics, he would have to take unpaid time off work and so we are paying for the patches Boots are doing buy one get second half price, however I look at this as an investment as his health has improved and we will save money over the years to come. It seems to be working very well for us and he really didn't want to give up for the first week or so on the patches, but went with it and its great!
yes there will be a small minority of people that will kick you when you're down but you will be back on your feet one day so ignore it, I guess you can see where some people are coming from as they think its self inflicted but then they don't know the details or background so keep going!
Is there any chance that now your OH is working you could renegotiate with your present landlord or has it just gone too far? Also if you are looking for private rent and OH is working you won't need to look for one that accepts DSS?
    Good luck!

If you have Wilkinsons near you check them out for patches a pack there tends to be about £11.99 which is much cheaper than Boots! (well it was last time I checked anyway)
  • Hi there,

Just a quick one to say well done on taking the bull by the horns. I declared myself bankrupt in August of last year, after having put my head in the sand and trying to struggle through by myself, getting myself in deeper and deeper. However, after finally getting advice from the national debtline and CAB I made the decision to declare myself bankrupt.

After a couple of weeks, the depression I had been in was quickly lifting, and after 7ish months things really are looking up. I no longer have the stress of debt, I HAVE to live off the money I earn, and it gives you a real wake-up call as to the value of money, or at least how best to manage the cash you do have. Half the battle is saying no to things!! this is surprisingly easy to do if you have no money left in your budget for the month - it's not as if you have the luxury to put anything on the credit card!!

I would just like to wish you good luck, and I promise that things do get better, and you can get back to feeling like a proper human again. I never realised how much stigma used to be attached to bankruptcy - and this is all it is - percieved stigma. The truth is, is that for people in real debt, it is the best thing they could ever do. As you already say, you now have enough money each month to pay bills, and it has MADE you budget for all the small bits and pieces you never would have thought of, but nonetheless mount up.

You'll find that this regime you will be forced to learn over the next series of months will stick, and the rest of your life can only get better, now that you have been through this trauma.

Again - I wish you luck, and lets hope the next time you have your credit checked, is to get that mortgage - no more credit cards peeps!! :T

    All the best,

    M

Also, thank you mat_the_w. It's nice to see that it is possible to come out the other end, and it is possibly a positive thing to do. :j

My hubby went bankrupt in feb this year and we are still in the process of me buying his share of our home - crazy!! It's refreshing to hear that things get better, the relief has gone but we aren't quite sorted yet, but thanks, you have made me feel better hearing such positive thoughts. As for the stigma, we are still holding our heads up high, we did all we could and I think it is easy to judge people when you aren't in that situation.
Thank you, you have cheered me up...

Having read through your reply etc. I'm sorry if I caused any offence with my post. I was honestly trying to help with suggestions to save here or there.

Again I'm deeply sorry if I caused you any distress or pain.

Thank you, and I'm sorry if I took it the wrong way. I'm sure you understand that it's difficult to gauge what people are trying to say over the internet. I appreciate you trying to help, and hope you can forgive the harshness of my reply. It's not an excuse, but the stress I'm under caused me to snap.

Again, thank you for trying to help, and apologising. And I apologise for snapping.
