When only takeaway will do?

Hotdogs and oven chips was always my favorite home fast food. I buy the bread rolls and freeze them., defrost in the morning.
Chuck a tin of cheap chilli in the microwave for chilli-dogs.
No one seemed to mind missing the take away for hotdogs somehow.
By the time the kids have set the table and put all the hot dog sauces out you are nearly ready.0 -
If ur other half can go get a take away, could he not pop into a tesco/asda and get one of the roast chickens off the hot deli? And a crusty loaf of bread/french stick.... so easy and it will be just right when u get home! You could even "invest" in some of that microwave rice stuff (which i reckon is okay tbh) and serve that with the chicken.......?
I make lasagnes and freeze them - i bet ur other half could pop one into the oven if u told him the exact time to pop it in and what heat setting etc.....i make them in individual portions as they heat up quicker (i buy those tin foil tray things like u get from the take away and make the lasagne straight into them, so u would even feel like u were having take away hahaa!)
OR - i have never met a man who cant make a bacon sarnie! Tell him to learnOh and i second all the people who have said egg dinners - egg & chips.... boiled egg & soilders.... omlette (with bits chucked in if u have them - ham and cheese maybe?) scrambled egg on toast? ALL good dinners!!
Best way to look at it is: any takeaway is going to be unhealthier than most food u make at home... SO even if u just have boiled egg and soldiers for example, it is MUCH better for ur family than take away despite not being MEGA healthy with veg etc.Baldrick, does it have to be this way? Our valued friendship ending with me cutting you up into strips and telling the prince that you walked over a very sharp cattle grid in an extremely heavy hat?0 -
The slowcooker is definately a great idea for a quick hot and tasty meal. Ive worn out three and am onto number 4 and do all kinds in mine! If you are worried about reciopes, then use the dried packet sauces, i.e. colemans/Ms A's, such as beef in ale, chicken casseroles etc. The cheapest cuts of meet coming out so tender they melt in your mouth, and if you chuck potatoes and chunky carrots in too you dont need to worry about veg on the side. Just dish up into a bowl and have some wedges of bread/french stick to mop up the juices mmm.

No drama's,just like to add that that particular range that Lidl's do is more like the oriental foodstuffs I used to by from the supermarket in Roermond than UK stuff. (Roermond was the local Dutch town to me when I was based at RAF Bruggen in Germany in the late 80's/mid 90's)0 -

I forgot about that! My Mum used to do this regularly as our "in a hurry" meal - exactly the same with the baguette as well!!
To the supermarket, grab a basket > salad section, pick whatever you fancy > deli counter, chicken > sometimes we'd get some sliced ham as well > bread aisle to get a baguette > checkout
Get home, get some plates out, and some butter and salad dressing from the fridge and unpack your shopping straight onto the table!!
Damn, now I want that too!!!0 -
Sardine [or pilchard] burgers- split bread rolls in half and toast both sides. Spread thin layer of mayo on followed by some mashed tinned sardines [in tom sauce] with sliced Edam on top. Pop back under grill to melt the cheese. We serve with baked beans. Cheap and relatively good for you.

And if you replace the mayo with half and half tomato ketchup / tomato puree you've got an almost instant mini pizzaHi, I'm a Board Guide on the Old Style and the Consumer Rights boards which means I'm a volunteer to help the boards run smoothly and can move and merge posts there. Hi Everyone,
I am looking for a bit of help here. My wife works shift work and by the time she gets in, sometimes after 9 pm, neither of us want to cook.
So frequently we go to just eat. We are that well known that we know all the delivery staff and we always get freebies.
Some months we can spend upto £200 on evening meal take aways alone. I did try Curry Queens recipe and loved it. However I have done this a bit too much now, if you get what I mean.
I also end up with coffee and toast every day at work, £3, combined with another £5 for lunch. I admit I am spending way to much. It doesn't help with the waistline either.
For some reason though, butty shop sandwiches seem so much tastier
So the coffee and toast is easy enough. Just eat before I leave and take my thermos mug.
I guess I need a boot up the !!!! to just get healthy and start cooking, but at 9 pm it isn't much fun.
Any ideas gratefully accepted.
To add to the problem, I am not really very good at cooking. Ok some meals like Mac N cheese, curries and such. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
getting good at cooking is just practice and reading recipes. Could you make a large pot of mince on a sat, freeze it in portions and tart them up to make different things like adding beans and chilli for chilli con carne - making a lasgne or pasta bake, spice up with mexican spices for enchilladas or burritosCats don't have owners - they have staff!!DFW Long Hauler Supporter No 1500
