i have been doing atkins for almost 4 yrs and have lost over 7.5stone and am now maintaining.. to me it isnt a diet its a way of life... i choose not to eat pasta, rice etc and i dont even like it anymore..

i can taste sugar in so many things its not funny... especially tomato ketchup which i used to like now tastes like a spoonful of sugar..u can buy low carb ketchup online as u can a number of other things but to be honest u are best trying to eat as pure as ucan for the first few weeks

its nice to see reasoned arguments on here as atkins isnt just meat and cheese and never has been altho a lot of people seemed to think it was... i really urge anyone thinking of giving it a go to read the book (i have seen it in poundland) then u will have the science behind it

anyone wants more info feel free to pm me and there is an atkins nutritional forum on ivillage that is very good and i post there a lot as do a lot of other knowledgeable people

    good luck x

  • I did Atkins a few years ago and lost well over a stone in 2 weeks! I was landed at the time, but as i was down to my goal weight, I started re-introducing foods, but continued to exercise and the weight stayed off!

I thought it was a great diet, but sadly for most (including myself) is a fad because of the cost, and sheer awkwardness of it. For the month I was on the diet, I found myself cooking, and eating, all the time. I'd get in from work, cook tea, eat tea, then cook lunch for the next day, then sometimes cook breakfast (or start to) for the morning, as I was up so early and you cant grab a cereal or piece of toast on this diet, go to bed, wake up, eat breakfast and do the day all over again. It seemed to me that food took over my life, and i started to not enjoy myself anymore! I'm not rubbishing the diet as I think its great, especially if you have help, but I did it on my own and got fed up pretty quick! I hate people who have the impressions that its bad for your cholesterol, and leaves you with bad breath etc! Its proven to be a highly successful diet, and hey, mints do exist! Smoking leaves you with bad breath, and a much worse lifestyle!!

Now, in the post Christmas diet-fest, I have decided to ditch the gut, and tone up, physique wise. I've never been a 'fat' person, but all of the weight I seem to gain goes straight to my belly, and looks terrible, considering the rest of my is in proportion, and still in good shape from when i used to play football. I find many of the diets out there are all very contradictive, but am deciding on one myself which is a bit atkins-esque, in that it focuses on heavy intake of protein, mixed with some veg, such as sweet potato, wholegrain rices and pastas for a varied diet. Its about fueling the body over the period of the day, and combining it with a work out plan that maximises fat loss, and muscle gain!

Sorry if i sound like Mr Motivator, but I do think that a varied diet where eating carbs at certain times of the day (ie before a workout) can be more beneficial than cutting them out as some diets do (not Atkins though, i know carb intake is important here) - although it does seem to say a direct 'no' to pastas, breads, rices etc which are needed for fuel, but the main key that people forget whilst on 'diets' is exercise! Its all very well losing weight on certain parts of the body, but if you dont tone it up, its only gonna go back on when the diet ends!

To summise - atkins is good, great in fact, but needs to be a bit more varied IMHO as it gets boring and a pain. It does encourage exercise for maximum results, which a lot of people dont realise, and a lot of other diets dont convey. Look at sports men, footballers in particular. They eat a varied diet, including (stereotypically) chicken and pasta, and train almost daily, and the shape they're in is phenominal! Basically guys, its all well doing this diet, but try go for a 30 minute jog every day if you can, or the results wont really prove the effort you put in.

i totally agree re the exercise.... once i started exercising my body shape changed and really took inches off certain areas .. it makes all the difference

i used to make my own low carb bread once i had completed a few weeks of atkins so that i could grab somethin easy for breakfast etc

my biggest tip is to make stuff ahead so u dont get caught always having to cook or not having stuff to snack on

i used to make mini omelttes and keep them in the fridge to snack on, also chicken wings.. celery with primula.. lettuce wraps etc etc

its not exactly like bread but its not bad toasted... I think its about 8 carbs in total.... dont overdo it til u are past induction

100g Ground Almonds.. sometimes i bung in some flax or oat flour as well
    25g melted butter
    2 tablespoons cream
    2 eggs
    1/2 teaspoon baking powder.
Mix wet ingredients, then add the dry. Pour into whatever container you like- (a lunch box makes it fit exactly into your lunch box afterwards)and nuke for 3 mins ... wait to cool then slice

by the way u could add some cinnamon and sweetener and maybe some coconut flour and made it as a cake

HTH.. feel free to yell if u need anymore recipes or info

  • We did Atkins a few years ago - both lost lots of weight (a couple of stone each) and felt fab on it. It particularly suited me because of an intolerance to wheat, and I never felt hungry on it; I was eating less than usual and enjoying every mouthful. I was eating more veg than I would normally have done, and in general my diet was healthier because just about every processed food was a no-go. I did a lot of research on the diet because like everyone I'd heard bad reports, but it made sense to me.

I do recall feeling a bit 'spacy' the first few days as my body went into ketosis, but that levelled out and could have also been caffeine withdrawal. I gradually stopped counting carbs but have kept the weight off. I wouldn't hesitate to do it again if I needed to; it suited me much better than a lowfat diet, and left me with so much energy.

We both tended to have diarrhea on it when eating foods sweetened with Splenda; the sugar alcohols can affect people that way. Constipation wasn't a problem for us.

  • Yes Atkins is an effective diet program but you have to strictly follow the instructions given by them. Otherwise all your efforts will invain. But I suggest you to loss weight by exercise.
