I agree instead of concentrating on improving my position in life and letting others get on with spending their own money on what they want I think it's much better to be jealous and riot so that I can steal and commit arson.

But in a way some rioters were improving their position in life, just that they have a different way of measuring it. In some pockets of the country it is all about gang culture, and in any gang you have a status.

The recent prisons inspectorate report noted the marked increase in gang adoption and recruitment within prison (perhaps we should call it riot university).

Strange - to me it explains exactly why Tamara and her ilk can't be bothered to get of their backsides - if I had a £1m crystal bath I don't suppose I would bother to work hard...or did I miss your point?

I think the crystal bath story demonstrates how unequally money is distributed within the population but doesn't explain why a significant proportion of today's yoof can't be arsed to work hard to achieve things in life and prefer to sit on their collective backsides and wait or everything to come to them.
    I think....

Tamara Ecclestone, 27-year-old daughter of Bernie, has sent 5 people to the Amazon to look for rock crystal to make a bathtub. She says "It's costing £1m because I've got to reinforce the floor and I've had to pay for everyone's travel and the hauling back and polishing of the crystal. But I spend a lot of time in the bath, so it's worth it."

Shouldn't we be patting her on the back for job creation? Five people on the hunt for the materials and then presumably jobs for all the bathroom fitters.

In all seriousness, it makes you a bit sad about life in general when you read stuff like this. But I guess it's her (her Dad's?) money, so they can spend it how they like.

No idea what this has to do with riots.

I think it's her money so her choice. The decision to tell everyone how much it's costing is crass and shallow however. I don't feel the need to ring her up and tell her how much my patio cost.

I think you should make that your main objective for Monday. If you can't get through to her directly I'm sure you could get a formal letter to her representatives. Make sure you list materials and labour. And when you do, emphasise the fact that you had to pay two men to go all the way to B&Q on the other side of town to source the materials, but it'll be worth it, as you'll spend a lot of time on that patio.

The difference is that Tamara doesn't need to get off her backside in order to afford it, whereas everyone else needs to work hard to be able to buy things. Unless you can't be bothered and think rioting & stealing is an easier option than working 40 hours a week.

With the possible exception of the first riot the rest was just looting conducted mostly by people with previous convictions. The reason for these mass lootings is that the people who did it are opportunist scum and had every reason to believe they would get away with it.

With regards to Tara Ecclestone, what she did shouldn't be illegal it is just a sad reflection on her values that instead of doing something positive with £1 million she wastes it like this.
  • Back to out rioter/protester heros, here's one in action: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uNNmthXSWlc

Words cannot describe the pride I felt for being British when I saw this brave young man mugging an injured student. Its a shame they've gaoled him, I think many of us would love to visit him and show our appreciation ;)
  • OP. So someone called Tamara has little sense of the value of money. What a surprise.

Also criminal scum engage in looting and rioting then try to justify their actions by claiming to be deprived. Again, what a surprise.

In reality, however, there is absolutely no connection between the two. Spoilt kids of the mega-rich will always behave in a vulgar way, and the criminal underclass will always behave like the scum that they are. Crystal baths are not required.

People behaved like Tamara centuries ago, often treating others badly in order to to achieve their objectives.

Now, we preserve their versions of the crystal bath and call them 'National Treasures.'

Where would our heritage be without the filthy rich nutters of the past? ;)
