What's the deal?
Version 5 of Quark is being given free as a CD (or DVD for a wee bit more) on the front cover of the March issue of PC Pro magazine, which costs £3.99.
This software in the past has retailed for between £600 and £800 depending where you get it from, though some techies don't believe it's worth that much.... .thought whatever it's worth, if you're going to use it, this is a serious bargain.
What is QuarkExpress?
It's a desktop publishing software which can design and publish print and web documents. It can create layouts for newspapers, magazines, user guides, annual reports, brochures and catalogs. It's used by many ad agencies, newspapers, magazines and book publishers.
How to get it
Magazine PC Pro is currently giving away a full version of QuarkExpress 5 with all copies of the March magazine. The magazine costs £3.99 (or £4.99 for the one with the DVD). Simply grab the magazine and ensure it has the CD taped to the front.
Why's it doing this?
Currently you can get up to version 7 of QuarkExpress, so it's unlikely the company is making much money out of selling version 5.
By giving away a free copy of version 5 it gets extra exposure of its product, and it makes you register so it hopes later you'll pay to upgrade to a newer version. Plus it means that those pirated copies that are being sold out there will be devalued, and Quark can keep control of its own product.

For all the people who couldn't get hold of it (if there are any). It's in March's edition of PC PRO magazine, issue 149.
It says that this requires online registration BEFORE 23rd March - so don't forget to do that.

When you sign up for the trial editions, are they current ones, or do you get three old ones? i.e. would it include the March magazine if you ordered now?
This is a fantastic offer! I used to work for a greeting card publisher and used Quark Xpress all the time for the design layout. I miss it! Definitely going to try to get it!0 -
cant believe that they have done the same offer again!!! i couldnt get hold of the magazine, so bought it from ebay for 24.00!! oh well its still a good saving, i desperately needed it as im a student, and needed it for an assignement i am working on, i have loaded it, and its really excellent, well worth the spend!!0

Hi Martin
Serif software make their previous versions of software for DTP, web site design, photoshop, animation and graphic design at https://www.freeserifsoftware.com.
The site tempts you to updrade to a newer version for various prices & there's no manual although in my experience the help is very good.Smile and be happy, things can usually get worse!0 -
I'd say its being given away to try and attempt to gain credibility...
Adobe's 'InDesign' is wiping the floor with Quark Express so they've got to be clutching at straws.
Grab a copy if you can and learn what a quirky, annoying and how generally user un-friendly it really is... and once 'evaluated' it, go and buy the 'Adobe Creative Suite' for about the same as Quark 7 alone!
*I should add, this is a good way to evaluate Quark so that you can make a more educated decision on whether or not to waste your money on it, just bear in mind its still quirky and inaccurate to use in a design & print environment.0 -
Anyone know when March edition is out? I went to morrissons and they only had the Feb issue??I Hate Jobsworths!!!0
-
Please note though that this is a PC only version. Of no use to Mac users.if i had known then what i know now0
-
I have a subscription for this magazine so have got the issue as soon as it's ready i guess.
I posted it up as soon as i got it though as it means you have a heads up to look out for it when it goes into shops.
Otherwise, you could do the 3 issues for £1 offer and i would think you may still be in time for the March issue, it's worth a try anyway.Lost lbs =
