Why is feedback SO important to some folk?

Actually I just left fb as a buyer and 3 stars is neither unreasonable or reasonable (work that one out) 4 is reasonable and 5 very reasonable, so maybe she left 4
  • Business sellers want feedback because it is a business and more positive feedback gives them an edge over the competition. Also they want to know there was no issue with that item and move on. However bombarding you with requests is a bit rude and counter-productive.
  • I wish more of my customers would leave feedback but like others, I'd never ask for it for fear of annoying them and getting bad DSRs.

What really bugged me just now is one of my customers commented on the fact my P&P charges are reasonable (and I re-read it to check) but my DSR star for P&P has gone down since before they left feedback and they were the ONLY person to leave me feedback today. Why say one thing and then leave contradictory feedback? Furthermore, I undercharged on this item; I asked for £3.75 but it cost me £4.41 to send. What more do people want?!

Maybe there was a misunderstanding with the stars, she could have left a 4 not realising that would affect your score negatively as it still means reasonable. A seller explained the stars system to me when ebay implemented it, otherwise I wouldn't have known leaving a 4 was bad! It can be confusing to buyers. I'm sure you didn't do anything wrong and they did seem satisfied with your service from the comment

Actually once you get past a certain point feedback becomes a little immaterial to a business seller. As long as we get a little to tick over we are fine.

I'd rather get no feedback than risk a buyer leaving even just one or two less than 5*

This customer has hundreds of feedbacks herself so I'm sure she is more than au fait. I've just looked through my seller account and about 1/3 of my customers haven't left me feedback.

As an aside, can anyone help with this query: I more than meet the criteria for a bronze power seller according to eBay's requirements, and have done so for months, but am not yet a Powerseller; is there anything else I can do to become one?

You need to be a business seller

    too many comps..not enough time!

If they're emailing daily asking for FB, then that really is annoying!

If you like the item, then I'd leave a +ve, but put a low star for communication, and perhaps put the comment as "Lovely item, but way too much pestering for feedback!"

I'd do this, but would leave at least a neutral. No point in leaving a positive as new buyers will skip through those. They will read the neutrals and negatives.
One important thing to remember is that when you get to the end of this sentence, you'll realise it's just my sig.

If everything on your dashboard has the tick to show you are eligible then phone them up and ask. I was showing as eligible for PS status and I never got the email but i phoned and they said it was something to do with having to wait a full month past becoming fully eligible (or something) but as I was on the phone they would do it there and then. They did that for the next day and about 4 days after that I got TRS as well.

    It works on averages.

All the people who don't understand it or leave fours for a reasonable transaction contribute only to the site averages, which are otherwise high (I'm not sure but I think it comes to about one in ten people). A seller who underperforms and goes below average is penalised because they attract more than their fair share of low ratings, not because someone in particular left them a rogue low mark.

Four is not bad, but if your stars are slipping overall or if you get more than the occasional low rating, it's always good to take a look at that area of your selling and see whether there is something you can improve on. It doesn't help you to write off a falling star as the result of stupid buyers - because everyone gets those. If you have disproportionately "stupid" buyers then it's time to stop living in denial.

Thing is i'm gettin a message every ruddy day saying hope you like your item..blah blah leave feedback and i'll do the same.
I'm afraid that I take quite a tough line with sellers like that - I'll email them back (once) to say that feedback is entirely voluntary, what they are doing is harassment, and if they ask me again I will leave Negative feedback and report them to eBay. Usually does the trick.
