Hello! first post so if i've put this in the wrong place then i'm sorry!

but basically, i'm in my 3rd year at uni, but in my 1st year (around march 2010) i leant a girl i was friends with at the time £25 for a train fare. she always said she'd pay me back at summer, but that came and went.

i then continued to ask her many times, and she said she was short of money. (but from what i've seen on facebook, she could definitely afford to amass £25 over a year and a half), but the last thing she said to me was that she promised she would get it to me. (this was also in facebook messaging.) however, the last thing i said to her went unreplied to, and then she deleted me as a friend, surprise surprise.

basically, is there anything i can do that won't cost me MORE than the £25 i need to get back? i've looked into statuatory demand but i'm not sure if i need a solicitor.

any help would be greatly appreciated!

    kate.

If you want to instruct a solicitor to recover the money for you then I fear it would cost more than the £25 you are owed. If you are at Uni then do they have a law department? - is there someone (law student/lecturer?) that can perhaps help you draft an appropriate letter?

I don't think you would be able to serve a Statutory Demand because I am pretty sure the sum owed has to be more than £750.00.

This link is exceptionally useful for learning about statutory demands:

You can apply for it to be set aside if less than £750.

all is well! after moaning at her a lot she's asked for the details and she's getting 'round to do doing it "soon".

so hopefully no need for this. thanks to both of you though, might be useful if someone IS owed a substantial sum of money.

That's good to hear. You can use the £25 to buy her a couple of drinks to say thanks.
