There is still a chance you could still get declined yet...
The application may get passed to AVU "Application Verification Unit" when they dig deeper into your credit history they may overturn the decision and decline you.
i have had my select account for two and a half weeks after having a step account run with no problems since since april 2008 (i recieved an email yesterday about my step changing to basic on nov 22 but thats another story), anyway - after applying and being accepted on aug 30th i have had the 'welcome to natwest' info pack, debit card (blue) etc - is there still a chance they could turn me down despite having these?0 -

My conversation with Natwest telephone banking today:
Me: Hi there, I'm calling about the email you've sent regarding the Step account
NW: How can I help?
ME: Well, obviously I'm a bit concerned about only being able to access Natwest/ RBS ATMs
NW: And Ulster Bank and the Post Office.
ME: Hmmm. Would you be able to process an application to upgrade my Step account to your 'Select' current account please?
NW: I'm very sorry but we currently don't have the facility to do that
ME: [pause]
NW: Our credit checking facility to process Step accounts into Select accounts is currently not working correctly and was accepting all applications in error, so we aren't able to carry the process out at the moment.
ME: Er, right. Even though I'm not applying for an overdraft or cheque book and you already know who I am?
NW: Yes, I'm afraid the application still needs to be credit checked via this system.
ME: I see, when will it be back on-line?
NW: Well it's been out of action for a few months and we estimate it not being available until December.
ME: So you've written to me telling me I'll no longer be able to use non-RBS group ATMs but I've got no option to apply to upgrade to a current account at present?
NW: Well, Miss P, we can offer you a Silver Select account today if you'd like?
ME: [pauses] Does that not need to be credit checked too?
NW: No, we can add it to your basic account.
ME: So, basically, I now have to pay £8 per month in order to use non RBS ATMs, I feel a bit like I'm being blackmailed!
NW: Well, the 'silver select' offers a huge amount of other brilliant benefits...
ME: But I just want to be able to withdraw my money from the nearest cash machine, just in case of emergencies, I don't need any insurance etc.
NW: Silence.
ME: Will I get charged a fee for using a non RBS/ Natwesh ATMs or will it physically not work?
NW: It won't work.
ME: [astonished silence]
ME: Ok, well many thanks for your help! [heads off to Barclays to open a current account with full salary going in]

Frankly that's ridiculous.
In branch it certainly can be done. All you do is apply for the Select account as a new account.0 -

Well possibly OTT. But isn't it the case that it is true that the only "upgrade workflow" is to Select Silver (or higher), whether from Select or Step (or Basic). Or to put that another way there is no "upgrade workflow" from Step (or Basic) to Select.
What you say about applying is right, but the poster doesn't present evidence that that route was suggested by the adviser. Which is a view "corroborated" in other posts.
I consider the Natwest/RBS position on this "sharp-practice" especially given that a successful "upgrade" (to a fee paying account) doesn't even appear to result in a full function "purple" debit card contrary to the very clear product information contained in pages 6,7 & 8 of the Natwest (&RBS) Current Account brochures dated July 2011 and currently on display in branches.
Double "sharp-practice" IMO.0 -

You should raise your concerns with trading standards or ASA. I always through the images was for iillustration purposes only.

The additional features listed on page 8 specifically link to the "standard features" of the "Select Account" (not the Basic Account).
I rest my case.0 -
It is not an "image" issue. The card "type" can be inferred from the printed description, particularly on page 7 of the brochures which clearly backtracks to the account "type".

I rest my case.
That my Opinion.

I am. I'm sharing a "reasoned opinion" in a consumer forum for the benefit of others, who if affected (mainly by on-train and Pay@Pump restrictions), can decide for themselves.
I circumvent the issue by relying on a credit card for the above uses.0
