Seriously though, who are all these cheeky beggars who are asking complete strangers? How rude!

Made me think actually - I work with a number of smokers, and people used to offer the cigs round when they had one themselves....I just realised I don't see anyone doing that anymore - you can tell the prices have rocketed.

It is unbelievably cheeky! I think that exceptional cheekiness on his part is probably what inspired your response!

And I remember the first time someone asked, I used the 'it's my last one line' and then he informed me that he seen my full pack so I obviously had some to spare, and that is when I became very frank and told him they were not spare, they were mine and I planned on smoking them all. If he wants some, he's welcome to go buy some at the shop and walked off. Ever since then, I was pretty firm.

Sometimes, it's easier to just say no and walk off, than try and give any kind of reason. It isn't necessary, we just feel like we need to for some reason.

And headphones won't stop people asking. I've had people walk directly into my view and start asking me before. My God! If you're THAT desparate for a fag, go buy a box!!

They are soooo expensive. I still sometimes smoke when I visit the UK (as all my friends do there and I find it harder to resist then), but after one pack from Smiths (at Gatwick) set me back nearly 8 quid (!!!), I now buy them here if I''m planning on meeting friends as they are still less than 6 euro's a box. Which just goes to show how much tax is levied on fags in the UK.

I would just save the next empty packet specifically for this purpose. Put one ciggie in it before getting into town, perhaps keeping it in a pocket rather than you handbag, so you can top it up if needed somewhere out of sight. You obviously will not have a 'spare one' if asked so can say no and sorry, but its your last one

It happens to me too, but I only smoke at home in the evenings and on a nights out (very rare nowadays). But people always ask "can I buy a cig", so it is even more difficult to tell them no, but I never take any money!!
I would be horrified if I ever had to ask someone I don't know!

I even went to NYC with friends and a person came to me!! My BF says she is never going out to make me company when I smoke because weird existences always come to me!!:-))

i smoke menthols too but people seem to be less qicky but normally its only other females who smoke them and i dont mind so much then lol.

awwww bless!! i remember selling them 6 years ago at safeway/morrisons where 20 L&B were £3.81!
