THOMSON ST585 v6 SPEEDTOUCH - is nat open by default

Options
hi there

on the THOMSON ST585 v6 SPEEDTOUCH is the nat setting open by default the reason i ask is a do a bit of xbox 360 online.?

i currently have a netgear dg834g v3 the nat on this is open by default ( confirmed by running xbox network test and fifa 11 and mw3 tellls me my nat is open) ,

the problem i have is at night time the snr drop to between 0 and 2db which can cause a drop in sync, in the day its between 6 - 9 db

i have read over on thinkbroadband the that the THOMSON ST585 v6 SPEEDTOUCH may be better at holding on to the snr better .

many thanks

I quote the following, which you may or may not have seen........
The slowly reducing SNR is probably due to radio interference. Adsl uses frequencies in the medium wave band and as propagation conditions change (between night and day) more signal from the MW transmitters gets on the line as noise. It's usually worse if you have spans of dropwire between you and the exchange. Nothing can be done to get rid of it unfortunately.

the netgear dg834g is a pretty old piece of kit, the 585 may be as old as they come from the same era. Can you persuade your ISP to give you a new router and see if does any better?
  • hi there

my isp router is rubbish, the reason i still have the netgear is because it has UPnP for my Xbox 360 so the nat port is open. i think thats why its open by dfault anyway?

the reason for the THOMSON ST585 v6 SPEEDTOUCH is that it meant to be good at holding the snr overnight, where the netgear does not causing a drop in sycn.

or can anyone suggest a better router that will hold the snr overnight?
    many thanks

think it might be difficult to be as specific on this trait of any router. I use now a quite old DG834N -ts rock steady all day and night at 10.8 db (snr) - There have been many good reports about the Edimax AR-7265WnA I have installed a few and have to say everyone appears happy - you could try contacting their customer service and see if they can be specific on this issue.

I did incidentally about a month ago have a BT line problem, wherein we got crossed lines - no problems on adsl - but the engineer did say that the crossed line was caused by the line acting as an aerial, which gave rise to my problem anyway.

yeah, D-Link DSL-2640B, available refurb off ebay for £20, and you can use routerstats and DMT with it ffor tweaking/monitoring your line performance (Broadcom 6348 chipset). I tweak down to 2.5dB (daytime) to sync, and it's still solid with no drops down at 0.5dB of an evening - I like them so much I've got 3 of them :) (need at least one spare ;) )

HOWEVER, word of warning.....it really is trial and error to find a router that suits your particular line conditions. For example, I've tried the usual DG834GT (same BCM 6348 chipset) and D-Link 2740B (BCM 6358 chipset), and neither work as well on my line as my trusty 2640B's.

Most newer routers, contrary to many people's thinking, are just plain not as good as some of the better older ones. Also, their firmware is locked down so you can't tweak/monitor line performance. e.g. someone suggested a TP-Link on here recently - BCM chipset, but locked-down firmware so you couldn't even directly telnet into it, never mind using DMT or Routerstats.

Oh, and the wifi range on my 2640B's is great, easily giving good signal strength on the top floor of a 3-storey house with router on ground floor.....p*ssed all over the 834GT in that respect also ;):D

p.s. use v3.06 fw on a 2640B, it's NAT is naturally less fussy that the later v4.01

scroll down the page to Software/Drivers, and it's there :)

BTW, if you know which ports you need to forward for xbox live, it may be worth trying that if you end up with a 2640B on v4.01 first before flashing to 3.06. It's something I need to do for my PS3 before I swap one of my 3.06 spares in :o

Also, for info..... DMT v8.07 works directly with D-Link v3.06 fw, as does Routerstats Lite. However, DMT or RS-Lite don't work with v4.01. However, I have a tweaked version of DMT v8.07 that does work, and you can set up full RS via telnet to work with v4.01 but without the setting target SNRM function. But DMT tweaked version does that anyway :)
