What did gay men do in the past? They lived lies. They married, and had families and in some cases made their wives, and children suffer while they lived a lie. And they felt forced into this because society wouldn't accept them. They were marginalised, brutalised and commited suicide.

There is no objection to being gay or having Civil Partnerships here as far as I can see.

I'm amazed that there's so much homophobia on the site - 22% of the voters have a problem with gay marriage?! Why is it any of their business what social arrangements other people have?
If it had been adam and adam we would not be here would we?

If Adam & Eve had been celibate, we wouldn't be here today. So should celibacy be banned? Should anyone who isn't a parent by the age of 30 be arrested and forced to procreate? Should society ostracise those not in a conventional relationship?

Come to think of it, why are priests celibate if mankind has a moral and religious duty to have children? Maybe fundamental Christians should bear placards stating that "God hates priests!".

Just because our ancestors commited an act that is contingent on the present existence of mankind, there is no reason to assume that such an act is a moral imperative.

    Gay marriage IS allowed.

I dont get the point of the poll therefore. Should it be allowed is a moot point - it already is!

Are you sure? I didn't think it was. As far as I'm aware only heterosexuals can get married and only homosexuals can be in a civil partnership.

I read a few months ago about a (straight) couple who were raising the issue... I think they were intending to sue the government in the EU courts to permit them to be joined in civil partnership. The implication was that if the law is changed to allow this, it will almost automatically follow from such a judgement that gay people must also be allowed to get married.

I think thats a little harsh Valli, everyone is entitled to their opinion. This is obviously a very touchy subject because it would be very easy to jump down the throat of anyone who disagree's by labelling them homophobic. I think many sensible posters will just avoid getting into the dispute, but the poll results so far are a little suprising to be honest.

Note this very similar incorrect use of apostrophe and compare.

    POLL

Are burnleymik and your opinioncounts the same person?;) x;)

Of course gay marriage is recognised by religions. Why would you think otherwise?

Is this true? I have very little knowledge on the subject but I always thought most mainstream religions didn't recognise same sex marriage as being a marriage. Personally I'm neither religious or gay so as long as neither bother me I don't really care.

Just to make you aware there was no adam and eve. Its called evolution so a situation where 2 single humans had to populate the earth has never happened it was merely a species evolving over many years and if you want to go along those lines i think youll find that homosexuality goes back as far hetrosexual. Link. although almost impossible to prove it is believed that same sex relations were more common BC (especially amongst men) as very few people had been manipulated by religion.

Many gay people themselves are opposed to gay marriage as it's essentially a heterosexual arrangement to legitimise children and satisfy religions. A civil partnership is different to marriage.

It's essentially the same thing. Everyone I know refers to my civil ceremony as a wedding, and my partner and I are each other's husband.

Even when I refer to it as a civil partnership, 90% of the time the reply is, "Oh I didn't realise you were married."

The only real difference is we had no mention of god in the ceremony, but seeing as you can have non-religious weddings, which aren't really marriage either (it IS holy matrimony after all) then there is no real difference.

Also, regarding the "adam and adam" line:

Homosexuality is quite common in nature. Particularly in birds, there are non-breeding male birds who partner up with a couple and it looks after the children. It's the equivalent of gay adoption.
