Hi Losingpatience
There is another thread where everyone asks their food safety questions. Feel free to have a look and read other peoples opinions there as well on all different types of products. It very much varies from person to person and depends largely what it is. Personally I would use it myself, but you only do so if you feel totally comfortable and safe.
Quick questions on food safety
There is also discussion about a programme which was held on tv, and it also has some chat about peoples differing opinions on sell by dates- so you may also find it useful.:D
Past its sell by date Tonight prog
Here is also a link to the food standards agency which is extremely informative.
I'll add your thread to the first one later, to keep all the suggestions together
Thanks.

Hi could someone advise please i brought 4 large chicken breasts and the use by date is 21st feb they have been in my fridge and i want to use them today.
Have opened the pack and there is no smell at all ,i have given them a wash but a bit unsure if they would still be ok to eat .?
I did intend to breadcrumb them and put them in the oven,do you think i should?0 -
If they don't smell they'll probably be fine.0
-
Should be ok, you'll probably find out around 30 minutes after eating them0
-
I would not risk it with chicken. Unless of course you want to spend the next two weeks with agonising cramps. You cannot smell salmonella.
I also guarantee you won't be able to eat them without thinking about it.0 -
it should be ok until it smells bad0
-
I wouldn't risk it with chicken, not all nastiness gives off smells.0

I am all for eating out of date food but chicken is one you have to be especially careful with for reasons other people have already given. If it had already been cooked I would have eaten it and have done but probably would only have cooked it max 2 days after use by date you are now 4 days over. This is only my personal opinion and I know it is a risk to eat out of date meat/chicken/fish.0

think people are way 2 zealous about dates on this message board.
as long as you cook it today and it doesn't smell funny then it will be fine.0 -
I would never risk it with chicken, and I normally totally ignore the dates! Chicken or fish simply are not worth the risk.
If you decide to risk it, make sure you overcook it, and do not use anything that will mask any "strange" flavour.
Good luck! What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare0
