  • I was going to ask a similar question about minced beef, so rather than start a new thread I will ask it here.

We bought some minced beef on saturday. On closer inspection when we got it home it looked quite grey instead of red. Any ideas if this is safe to eat?

(btw we bought 2, froze one on the day and used the other on sunday but didn't eat it as it looked funny. So I am asking if it is safe to use the other one which was frozen straight away)

  • It'll be fine - the alcohol and boiling will kill all known germs!

It's not necessarily the germs, though, it can be the by-products of spoiling that can make you ill _pale_ If the meat were still in datye, I'd probably cook it well and eat it :D I'll add this to the Food Safety thread to keep ideas together.

That's how it's supposed to be ;) IMHO, bright red meat shows it hasn't been hung long enough, and will be tough and tasteless. If it smells OK likelyhood is it will be OK :D

Shoppergal - can you freeze the mince

  • sorry for delay thanking people, totally forgot i had posted this.

i turfed it in the bin in the end. had bought it in the butchers so it didn't have a best before date on it. smelt a bit off(probably in my head) so thought for the sake of €2.50 it wasn't worth it. thanks everyone for the advice
  • Hi everyone - I made some chutney on Monday night. I put lids on whilst contents are hot, to seal the jars.

Most are fine but one of them has condensation in - is this a problem?

    Hi Eagerlearner,

I saw your question yesterday but didn't reply because I don't know the answer as it's never happened to me. If I was you I'd store that one in the fridge and use it first.

Hope someone who knows what they're talking about comes along soon.
