Using my mobile whilst abroad...

Hi all,
I'm trying to find the cheapest way to use my mobile whilst abroad.
I'm going to the french alps in a few weeks and I could do with being able to have cheap calls from my mobile back to the UK and from my mobile to another UK mobile that is also over in France (my friends are in different accomodation).
The later normally costs a fortune as the call goes from the France to the UK and then back to France charging for every step of the way.
Can anyone help with this.
I use 18866 and 1899 on my landline but I'm not sure if any of these will help with this?
Thanks
Simon
PS I'm on orange with the '3 equiv.' tarrif (500 x-net minutes for £25)

Orange are offering £5 free calls abroad as part of their TRY promotion,
they also sell roaming minutes as add ons, you buy as a bundle and get them at cheaper rate,

I've already used the 'TRY' deal last time I went.
I was hoping for something cheaper than using Orange. Is there any override?
Thanks

Is it not just easier to text as this is just the normal charge with no other charges incurred0

Think of a foreign payg SIMcard in an unlocked phone.0

A french PAYG was one of my considerations. My brother has done this and I think I might follow in his footsteps... Anyone know where to buy one cheap whilst still in the UK. If not I'll buy one when over there...
Thanks all

texts are dearer abroad as you get charged by Orange and the local company, you also get charged the double rate for receiving a text whilst abroadI am a Senior Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Wales, Small Biz MoneySaving, In My Home (includes DIY) MoneySaving, and Old style MoneySaving boards. You get charged for receiving calls abroad but NOT for receiving texts, only making them costs, and varies depending on your network and tarrif. For example, texting the UK from the canary islands on Orange is 40p.0

Hi Simon,
Interested to know how and where in France you can get a SIM card easily. Does it work out cheaper to phone home than on a British Sim?
I have an O2 Payg and was charged 50p each time my sister txtd me whilst I was in France! Only cost her the usual 10p to send!
My husband was also hit by a large sum when his mate phoned him from the UK. He didn't realise he was also paying to receive the call in France or he would have let the call go on for so long!
Wouldn't it be the same for someone over here to have to pay to receive from a call originating in France on a French Sim card?
AnnaMoney can't buy you happiness, but it does bring you a more pleasant form of misery.
