Please help, problem with Orange
I am a student that used to have a contract with Orange well over a year ago.
When I was able to cancel my contract, at the end of the period it was agreed, I called up asking to cancel my contract, asked what was left to pay, paid it and was told it was successful and checked that everything was done- it was cancelled and fully paid- and I was told it was before I ended the call.
But since a few months ago I have had letters from Orange, Northern Debt Recovery and Moorcroft Debt Recovery LTD sent to my home address threatening to pay debts of about £130 to Orange and £100 to NDR and Moorcroft. They threaten further legal action in their letters and have threatened to cripple my credit rating. This is not fair. I am a student who couldn't even pay this if I wanted to, but I have absolutely no intention; I cancelled my contract over a year ago after consistent direct debits were paid for the entire duration of the contract.
I was also told to cancel the direct debit to Orange, at the time, which I did directly at the bank as I was told to.
Could anyone please give me some advice? It is like they are going to try and ruin my life if I don't take some action now, I cannot have my credit rating affected for my future and I could never afford these debts anyway.
I will not pay, I will not be taken advantage of and will not continue to be threatened by these companies every time I pick up my mail from home, but I just need to know what action I can take to make them stop.
Thanks

Have you got proof you paid the last of your bill? A bank/credit card statement?
Could you have canceled the direct debit before the last payment went out?0 -
Unfortunately, this !!!! happens again and again and mostly with Orange.
I think they have already trashed your credit history before selling the 'debt' to third parties. Check your credit files.
Normally you have to ask for the proofs of the 'debt' and then discuss this with Orange.
Any chance you requested the PAC, but had not used it?0 -
The PAC? sorry
All I did was call them up, cancel the contract and pay off anything else that was required, which I did successfully. I didn't think it was that complicated to do. They knew I was cancelling the contract, I ensured that this is what they did on my last call to them. I can search for some proof, but all my statements are now online and not paper.
I cancelled the direct debit a few days later after I had paid the final amount- I was told specifically that it had gone through during the phonecall.
Surely I can do something about my credit history though? Otherwise I'm pretty much screwed for the future, for loans and mortgages that I will need when I finish university? If this can't be sorted I don't know how I will be able to live the life I'm already trying to set up for myself. It's not fair that they are doing this now
By the way, I'm really grateful for your fast responses to me
Thanks0 -
Yes, it's not fair, but this is the reality.
Orange can remove the records from the files if you persuade them, but it will be a hard job.
That's why it's a bad idea to rush with cancelling the DD. If the contract is terminated correctly, the DD can do no harm if left uncancelled.

Thankyou for the linked material, the only reason I cancelled the direct debit is because I was told to by whoever I spoke to; I wouldn't have even thought of it otherwise. I know the final payment did go out at the time because I did monitor it. The things I read have really scared me tbh, I know I will have to call them tomorrow but I will never be able to pay this debt regardless of what they say. All I did was cancel the contract, pay what was left and was told that it was taken care of and that I didn't need to do anything else... I don't know how I was supposed to know otherwise
There's nothing else I can do as far as I know0 -
SO... now England its the Scots turn to say dont leave the UK, stay in Europe with us in the UK, dont let the tories fool you like they did us with empty lies... You will be leaving the UK aswell as Europe

I always cancel a contract in writing never on the phone and do not cancel the DD until you have receive your last bill and confirmation that the account is closed.
My contract is up with 02 soon and the lady on the phone said that I could do it on the phone but I am doing everything in wriitng to cover myself.0 -
hey! i need help! please... i dont know whatr to do.
Besically, i ave a problem with orange phone that they sold me. My contract is 24 months and i have already replaced the phone 4 times!
First because when iwas about to pick it up it froze and the battery was very very poor even though i didn use apps or didnt call or text. another two times was the same, they kept on sending me the same model but always the same problem. so i called them up and said i cant have this phone anymore because it doesnt fit for the purpose, so they sent me the same make but differetn model but withoutmcharger, however the charger is universal and it should work so i guess the phone they sent me is AGAIN faulty!
So i CALLED THEM UP and said i don;t want to be link with orange and i want to cancel the contract but i am not going to pay anything because i dont thiink i should pay for something they don;t deliver. They said they can't do this. i was about to go abroad and said i want o talk to manager so they aranged a call for today but they never called. I am so so so angry and feel like i was not treated like respected customer but like someone they can fool. i dont know anymore.
DO you think i have right to cancel the contract ? please help me!0 -

Your keyboard is playing up and needs a replacement too.0 -
What you were told on a phone is worth nothing, this is the grown up world and we use paper.
you should have confirmed everything in writing when dealing with something as important as cancelling a contract .
Your only chance is to recreate the paper trail by asking them to provide copies of bills and your bank to provide statements.
when you have this, if you can not see any outstanding debts then tell them to go straight to court.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0
