The commit charge doesn't show up on vista, you have to download process explorer to see it. OR Download and install cleanmem http://www.pcwintech.com/cleanmem (download direct download).Find c:\program files\cleanmem\mini_monitor, run it and right click the icon (near the clock) to set it to automatically run at startup, show percentage to keep an eye on your ram use. This will help free up any spare ram floating about as you use it.

if you could post the fresh hijack and commit charge from the other xp machine sometime, I'll look for any leftovers.

  • You need more RAM for the Sony. Perhaps another GB. What is the model number?

Agreed..............but the clean-up will also help move things along too.

RAM is the cheapest and best upgrade you can do for a PC - each service pack increases the size of the system, and increases the amount of virtual memory usage (remember virtual memory is the pagefile file on the hard drive). Extra RAM will decrease the virtual memory usage, and reduce the amount of reading/writing sruff to the hard drive
  • If the OP is still interested, I saw a Dell 2400 dimension desktop this weekend and it worked fine with PC2700 (512mb stick) and a PC3200 (256mb) stick of ram fitted.

The PC2700 / 512mb ram was the originally supplied stick from Dell and the PC3200 / 256mb was from a Dell Dimension 3000 (similar era)

Even adding just this extra 256mb ram made the 2400 run a bit better and loaded up applications faster....this was on a PC that was still running the originally installed operating system as from Dell and without much done other than running CCleaner and uninstalling the unused Voyager modem drivers.

Of course sometimes you have to reload WIndows to make it run properly again, it can only last so long before it just goes bad.
