help with slow dell desktop 512MB RAM

  • I've read that some dells of that vintage (Dimension 2400 and 3000) can sometimes be picky about mixing ram types.... while I've never had any issues a few forum postings suggest 'some' people have not had luck mixing newer faster DDR ram with the original older slower DDR ram.

I'd never heard of this issue until I looked into getting some DDR ram for a Dimension 2400 and 3000 recently.

I suspect that if you get decent branded ram like Crucial then you can mix speeds as you'd expect.... it might just be the cheaper ram that has higher densisty ram modules that don't mix well which has been the case in the past.

Spannerzone does make a fair point about cheap RAM

Although I do have a Dell 2400 here, in situ, with PC3200 hynix RAM - and it is working! I would on the whole prefer to use better RAM - it relatively inexpensive these days, plus you can get branded RAM on ebay (provided you are careful) to get the right stuff relatively low cost -only £5 more than the cheapo.

or here if you prefer PC2700 (and probably cheaper)

I believe that you are incorrect. PC3200 RAM is inchangeable with PC2700 (PC2100 not really available anymore). The Dell link is old and doesn't reflect current conditions.

If you look at Crucial's website (one of the best RAM suppliers you will see that they supply PC3200 & PC2700 guaranteed to fit)

    http://www.crucial.com/uk/store/listparts.aspx?model=Dimension%202400%20Series&Cat=RAM

PS I have fitted PC3200 RAM to the Dell 2400. Its fine.

Of course the crucial stuff will fit -"guaranteed to fit" - broken m/b otherwise !!!!!!!
Crucial stuff is guaranteed in so far as money back if it doesnt work. It may well not work.
Cpu-z will tell you what you have now - http://www.cpuid.com/downloads/cpu-z/1.58-setup-en.exe

Ddoris you are quite cynical...We use Crucial because they are one of, if not the best supplier of RAM. Their reputation in our experience is not misplaced. If what you said was true they wouldn't have the reputation they have. If you were employed in the industry, you would know that.

As you either don't know or don't trust others that contradict you here are the CPUz readings from a Dell 2400 - please check it out. This system is using both Nanya and Hynix PC3200.

What I said is true. Read it .
  • It's also possible that a BIOS firmware update may exist for the desktop, sometimes this can allow for better harware compatibilty.... I had this on my Dell Vostro 200 recently, I used Crucial for some more ram and it didn't work (3 sticks worked ok but not with 4th stick) so did a BIOS firmware update and memory then got detected correctly.

The BIOS update did not mention improved memory compatability but it worked nevertheless.

Hello DDoris, I thought that the purpose of these forums was to give best advice to the OP. If I was them at the moment I would be thoroughly confused by all the contrary opinions. I suggest that it is more important to consider the OP rather than use semantics to justify ones opinion.

robmar0se has proved that PC3200 is absolutely acceptable with Crucial, Hynix & Nanya RAM, on the Dell 2400 I know from my experience that Samsung and S3 and Transcend are fine too at 3200. I haven’t had any 2400’s that I can recall with either Kingston or Corsair RAM, but I would think these are fine too. If mixing 2700 & 3200, then as previously stated, the higher spec should go in slot 1.

In your original post you were quite categorical that PC3200 was incorrect, quite understandable if you were only looking at an out of date Dell infosheet. Hopefully you will be man enough to agree that PC3200 RAM with the right spec will be fine. PC2700 with the same spec is not wrong its just an option. We prefer branded rather than generic RAM.

I am guessing from your last post, that perhaps you don’t like the word “Fit”; is it because you are thinking of physical placement? Of course all DDR (2100, 2700. And 3200) have the same fitting, but this is semantics, as really what matters is “fit for purpose” – all 3 are fine if the right spec.

from Spannerzone - It's also possible that a BIOS firmware update may exist for the desktop, sometimes this can allow for better harware compatibilty.... Good point, however the last BIOS update for the 2400 was A05 (2003); uf not already, it should be updated.

Hi folks, thanks for taking the time to help me with this. Must say that following the advice from 'closed' my 8 yr old dell is running quite well although I'm waiting for the extra memory to drop through the post to see if I can get it running any better. I'm typing this from a sony vaio laptop which I picked up from the states and has slowed down terribly.

following the sticky should help - especially disabling windows defender, replacing kaspersky with avast free, update IE, run startuplite, uninstall aol, if low on ram install cleanmem

What does the xp log look like now, and what is the commit charge

The best way of cleaning up a slow or badly infected machine is to backup all your data to an external drive, and do a factory restore using the factory restore partition (see manual or manufacturers website) or Windows disc. The alternative is to do it manually as follows (the list may look daunting, but should take less than an hour of effort (apart from virus scans)) :-

    __________________________________________________

Unless you need them running all the time, use the startup tab in msconfig to disable these items from running at startup (they can always be run manually if needed)

This is a general guide on cleaning up infections and speeding up pc's https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/2436849

If you haven't all ready done it, Install Malwarebytes and do a FULL (not quick) scan (after updating it), fix anything found before closing, otherwise you'll have to do it all over again. You may get prompted asking if you want to run the free 14 day trial during install, I suggest you decline this offer, as it will slow things down. If anything was found reboot the machine before continuing. http://www.filehippo.com/download_malwarebytes_anti_malware/

Install and run ccleaner (untick the google toolbar during the install). Untick the "windows log files" box, under the system heading before cleaning. Also Tick the java cache tick box under CCleaner, applications, internet to wipe the java cache which sometimes hides infections. http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download/slim

Install and run startuplite, accept suggested changes - http://www.malwarebytes.org/StartUpLite.exe

Click the java icon in control panel, updates, untick check for updates

If you want a speedy machine, Use windows firewall and replace your antivirus and security software with avast 6 free - (a fast and lightweight virus scanner with good detection rates) http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download :

This is a list of (or remnants of) security software evident in your log, you may wish to uninstall these in Control Panel (add/remove programs or programs/features) to keep your PC running smoothly, too much overlapping or bloated security or useless tuning software can have a drastic effect on performance - always leave one resident scanner running (eg avast/avira etc)

This is a 1gb RAM model but is so awfully slow now.
I've done the ctl alt del thingy but am unable to pick up the commit charge total and peak. All that i can see is physical and kernel memory and some bits of information on system (handles/ threads/ processes/ up time and page file).
