Please confirm Dell model - do you have a Voyager ADSL modem still attached, or are you now using a router?

512mb RAM for XP SP3 is not enough it will be very slow - SP3 needs min 768RAM, but preferably 1gb,

We obviosly agree that there's not enough RAM. However, I'm guessing, but if the OP is running XP, it may well be using DDR rather than the later varieties, usually we like to know the model so we can match, the type, as well as being aware of the board requirements/limits.

I also noticed the Voyager modem in the HJT, there are probs with the software and may need a registry change to remove - it can cause a delay in booting while looking for it - assuming its no longer attached of course.

The OP should also do a clean-up and defrag to maximise hdd performance.

That is correct - 1gb costs new £33 from Crucial UK new with lifetime warranty - may get it cheaper elsewhere or even lower on eBay - but make sure of the spec - it must match:

I suggested 1gb, as you may find both the existing slots are filled, which means replacing one - if you only have one existing 512mb RAM strip, then you would find another 512mb adequate.

Regarding the old modem, lets deal with that later, as what you are doing, and the extra RAM will make a marked improvement (I have supplied the same PC to my sister!)

Closed: Its been checked its 1gb per slot - there are 2 - the spec is above.

I know this machine/model well, the advice given above is 100% correct - take my word for it. XP SP3 will be slow with 512mb installed,

XP with sp3 with avast uses around 128mb of ram, and it won't be slow once the bloat is removed.

And run Windows Updates too, you should not be on IE7 still (should be IE8).
