help with slow dell desktop 512MB RAM
Comments
-
XP with sp3 with avast uses around 128mb of ram, and it won't be slow once the bloat is removed.
Whilst Closed is correct in theory, he, or she, is unrealistic. Unless a user is prepared to spend time frequently removing bloatware, then it will quicky slow. For most non-technical users it is not human nature to do this, they just want a PC to run reasonably without having to service it frequently,
I think contrary posts such as the above, only serve to confuse and don't help the original OP. As I said previously, XP SP3 with usual programs will run far more efficently with a RAM upgrade - the benefit will be immediate, plus the slow down will be much more gradual.
For example I cleaned up a Dell 2400 for my sister, it had 512mb RAM too, yes it was running acceptably when I gave it to her, but even within a couple of months it had slowed noticebly, and she is not a heavy user. Now with 1gb ram it is running significantly faster.0 -
appreciate all the help (on a saturday!). Will pick up the extra RAM and set about taking the tower apart. Will post back when it's all done. Will try the same stuff on a sony vaio which runs vista..prettty sure it's a 1gb memory which has slowed down even worse than this dell.'You see the coefficient of the linear is juxtapositioned by the haemoglobin of the atmospheric pressure in the country..c'mon gajive join the party' :dance:0

Once running smoothly, no servicing is required, just don't install bloat. It makes no sense to throw money at a problem unless the free avenues have been tried first.
Unless the bloat is removed (which will take about 1 hour), it will never run optimally however much ram is installed.
The machine with lexmark drivers, avast, and itunes should use under 200MB, which if it has 512 installed leaves plenty for applications and cacheing.!!

please could you tell me what the 'bloat' is that you see on my system? I can remove them straight away because when I opened up control programme/add, remove programmes there was stuff there that I'm not sure what it does... so hesitant to uninstall.'You see the coefficient of the linear is juxtapositioned by the haemoglobin of the atmospheric pressure in the country..c'mon gajive join the party' :dance:0

Spec is correct.................Very simple to install, put case on its side, (remove power supply first!). If you are a person who always appears to have static, then make sure you are earthed first - latex gloves will help. You'll see a right angled black knob, push it towards the bottom, and at the same time, slide the side nearest the knob off backwards.
You'll see the RAM strips in the middle, as per the one you buy. Push the white clips outwards, and remove one strip |(if both filled. preferably the one nearest to the green plastic fan cover). You will notice that the strips have an off centre notch in the bottom,, make sure when re-inserting the new RAM, that you have it the right way round so the notch marries. Push the ram down firmly so that the white clips engage, as per existing. Slide the lid back and you're done apart from one little change to the software;
Power on, Dell will complain that something has changed, just hit the F1 key and it should disappear. When booted, goto the control panel. then the system tab. This should now read the total RAM if you have inserted ithe RAM correctly. Now we need to change the virtual memory to make best use of the RAM.. On the system window, click on the "advanced" tab, then the "settings" tab on performance section, then the "advanced" tab again, then on "change" in the virtual memory section; now click on "system managed" then "set", then okay, repesting till you are back to your start screen, Reboot, and the new settings will take effect.
Sounds a lot, but really is quite straight forward.0 -
Spec is not correct, according to Dell - http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dim2400/en/sm_en/specs.htm
Older pc's can be picky with ram.
duh - work through the guide , use google to find out whats what - only you can decide if you need progs.0 -

I believe that you are incorrect. PC3200 RAM is inchangeable with PC2700 (PC2100 not really available anymore). The Dell link is old and doesn't reflect current conditions.
If you look at Crucial's website (one of the best RAM suppliers you will see that they supply PC3200 & PC2700 guaranteed to fit)
http://www.crucial.com/uk/store/listparts.aspx?model=Dimension%202400%20Series&Cat=RAM
PS I have fitted PC3200 RAM to the Dell 2400. Its fine.0
