Modem Router Problem

  • so have you got into your router admin page yet?
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?
  • I think I've managed to do that, put "admin" and "admin" in the right boxes and got it restarted, so I assume that bit was correct? It still claims no dial tone though, despite the adsl light showing up bright and clear. Sorry, you'll have to forgive my lack of technical-speak, flying by the seat of my pants here.
  • Thanks for trying to help me, guys - I really need to go to bed

    XX Sarah
  • so, you have taken the phone lead out of your modem, plugged it into the router adsl port, the adsl light comes on the router, and something shows no dial tone, where is that message coming up?

have you put your id and password into the router yet?
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?
  • The "no dial tone" message appears on screen, when I try to reconnect.

As far as I'm aware, yes I have put my ID and password in
  • how are you trying to reconnect, you no longer need to dial with a router, once it is configured with your details, it does the dialling automatically.

you need to go into your router config, and put your talk talk id and password in.

then tell ie in tools, internet options, connections to never dial, then it should work
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?
  • Someone I'm talking to elsewhere has just suggested that I should inform my ISP of the MAC code of the new modem router - would that help? Is it worth me spending an hour trying to talk to TalkTalk?

    no it wouldn't help.

I'm trying to help, but it's a 2 way street, and without any answers, it's difficult..

have you turned off the dial bit yet? if so, what happens?

if you tell us what you have done, what settings you have entered, it would help.

soggy moggy, someone elsewhere is sending you down a blind alley. i can vouch for albertross's advice. tell him whatever he asks and follow his instructions exactly and you'll be up and running soon. it sounds like you're almost connected, short of a few clicks.
Apparently I'm 10 years old on MSE. Happy birthday to me...etc
  • Sorry, Albert - at 1.12 a.m you wouldn't have got a two-way street, this street was in bed, howling frustration into the pillow.

I appreciate the assistance, but the fact remains that I can't configure the router because I can't get online through it to do so.

The instructions that came with the router say "Access the WBMR-G54 configuration pages - launch your web browser" - I can't because there's no connection

The instructions in that link you posted above say "open up your internet browser and type 192.168-etc" - I can't because there's no connection

The only way I can get online whilst still holding some sort of connection to the new modem router is to leave the old modem plugged in (via its usb port). The only connection then between the new router and the PC is the ethernet cable which the old modem does not use.

By this method yesterday I managed to do all the bits you suggested about usernames and passwords both being "admin", but as I was still connected via the old modem, it was surely of no use at all?

The only thing I can think of is one of the other questions in the forum you linked me to above - someone was having what sounded like a similar problem and solved it by buying a new telephone cable - I too apparently have a clear asdl connection, but no BB signal.

I know we're going round in circles here; I'm tempted just to shove the whole lot back in its box and return it.
