Modem Router Problem

Apologies if I should have been able to find this somewhere else, but I've been looking all afternoon and haven't come up with anything remotely useful.
I took delivery earlier today of a Buffalo WBMR-G54 Wireless ADSL2+ Modem Router. I'm with TalkTalk (never had any problems, touch wood), and have never had any issues with the modem I'm using currently, their Sagem 800 bog-standard one issued when we took up their offer three or four years ago.
I've read the instructions and plugged the cables into the right sockets, I have lights for power, ADSL, WLAN and LAN1 (being the number of the socket). There is also a "Status" light, which has been flashing ever since the thing was connected. There is absolutely nothing in the (very limited) manual to explain this flashing light.
That's as far as I've got - the next bit has to be done online, and this is where my problems lies. I can't get online.
Right now, using my old faithful Sagem modem, I have a green arrow indicating that there is broadband activity. When I unplug this modem, it disappears (as you would expect), but there is no corresponding indicator when I plug in the Buffalo, and any attempt to connect ends in failure.
I'm getting increasingly frustrated - I went for the Buffalo after wading through hundreds of different models, mainly because although i couldn't find many reviews of this model, the few I found all said it was dead easy to install
There is a disk, but of the several manuals it contains, none relate to this particular model
All I want to achieve at this stage is a wired connection between the new modem and the PC. I'll worry about the laptop later *sigh*
Can anyone shed any light on why this modem can't find the BB signal?

try plugging it into your ethernet card on the PC, type start, run, cmd
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
ipconfig
look for the gateway address then use that in internet explorer.
e.g. http://192.168.1.1 admin admin
then you have to plug in your phone cable, and tell it your talk talk username and passwordEver get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
Thanks both - Steve, I can't view that, it just loads then freezes everything.0

right click on the link, and save it to your PC instead, it's a pdf, so you'll need adobe acrobat reader to view it

You can download some setup instructions for a couple of routers here:

and it looks like a blinking status light indicates correct operationApparently I'm 10 years old on MSE. Happy birthday to me...etc0

That's why I'm so confuddled - it seems to say it's working just fine, it just keeps telling me there's no dial tone. Everything's plugged in, I'm at a complete loss :-(0

Correct, Steve. Or it would be if I hadn't had to plug the old one back in to get back here!0
