what is a thinkpad?0

Bought one from Laptops Direct a few months back and got a good deal on a refurbished one.NO!
I went looking for a new one i had in mind and the guy showed me a refurbished one for £10 more but nearly twice as big in memory and ram. The reason it was a refurb was because it had been on display.Still brand new in box with guaratee and everything, never been out of the store.0 -

It's a business range of laptop, originally from IBM, now taken over by Lenovo.

You have no idea what I sell because I have never put a link to any of my listings on here or even remotely hinted at my business name.
The laptops I now sell are at most 3 to 4 years old but nearly all of them have been in storage with little use. I've sold 4 year old Thinkpad x60s's with battery charge cycle counts of 1 - the one I put on. They've never been used - the keyboard doesn't even have the tiniest hint of wear on. I like to sell them because they are bomb proof and never come back. And I don't sell them with half eaten batteries and even if they were, as they did over 5hrs new, they'd still get more on a charge than 99% of those in PC World and still last longer. I've sold 5 year old Dell Latitude D610's with the original batteries that are still giving over 3hrs on a charge and 4 year old Thinpad x60s's giving over 5hrs on a charge.
And with mine, most of the Thinkpads I sell typically have 12 months or more Next Day Onsite Parts and Labour warranty far better than anything you can even buy in PC World. Put in a claim at 3pm and an engineer will be on the door the following morning and they won't even ask how you did it.
As I recall, PC World will leave you without a laptop for at least a fortnight assuming they'll do anything at all.
And whilst you can buy a £250 machine and take care of it apart from the fact the battery will be virtually duff after 12 months, do you think a 10 year old is likely to do the same?
I am not concerned with what you sell, as that it not to what is linked to on this forum.
What is linked to here is not as you describe.
If you have a machine suitable for the OP, then link to it. I'm sure the OP would prefer hard links.
Contrary to your assertions, I have a three and a half year old ACER without a single scratch or fault. Battery is as new as I rarely use it.
Paid just over £300.
So please, link to a machine as you describe, within the OP's budget and let him and us decide for ourselves.0 -

Does he need a Fax modem or built in Bluetooth? If not, there is no advantage in buying the old machine.
The second of your choices will need another 1GB of RAM at least, unless you downgrade it to XP.
Your first choice is only £10 short of the price of the 'as new' Toshiba to which I linked, once you have added the price of the 1 year warranty cost to it.0 -

I wrote 'NO!' because it isn't great value and has Vista pre-installed.

You need to reply to Hammyman, I have already provided you with a link.0 -
as a general rule, the majority of newer laptops are, as hammy quite rightly pointed out, bl00dy flimsy when compared to either business-grade or even slightly older consumer models. For example, I've replaced screens recently on under a year-old machines that have such flimsy plastics that once taken apart to swap the screens, they just would not fit back together properly due to the clips around the bezel being made of plastic the consistency of damp cheese

Compare this to the build quality of Thinkpad T- and the later X-series, which you can take apart and put back together time and time again if needs be (not that it's likely you will ever need to, of course) and you'll understand where Hammy's coming from
And as for not wanting XP Pro and a 80GB hdd, why on earth not?? XP = good, and 80GB ?? My main desktop is 6 yrs old with an 80GB hdd, and it's still only half-full. What's a 10-y-o going to fill it up with that quick ?? Bear in mind XP only takes 6-8 GB of disk space............Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple
