I see a lot of people complaining about being TPS registered but still receiving calls.

The way companies can get around this is basically any single form you complete, right at the bottom in the small print it will say it will sell your details to third parties etc click/tick box if you do not want your details sold.

If you miss that then TPS rules go out the window and no longer applies to you.

Some companies word it the other way round and say do not tick this box if you do not want your details to be sold on.

This is even in electoral rolls my friend works for a claims group in London and they contacted the local councils and bought all the electoral information from them for all the major cities selling windows or somet, all your documentation you sign online and paper copy. Even in small print in page 200 thousand that your 99% not going to read and if you miss that box regardless if your on the TPS Register, the rules become void to you and companies can start calling you again.

On top of this you can join TPS then complete a form and not tick the box, get calls re-register then do the whole process again.

    :(

I had a phone call from these on my mobile last night. I said to the lad 'You must be the 4th person to ring me' He replied 'Did you like it' I said to him 'What being pestered over the phone' His reply was ' Well you are still on the phone you madhead' and put the phone down. I can tell you I felt sick all night. Another call 10mins later was a different person and I told him what had happened and he apologised and said maybe he had a bad day. I get bad day's with Jo public but I don't speak to them like that.
  • I've just had my second call from them in two weeks. They withhold their number so you cannot report them to TPS. The first call I had went on about the fact that they had received an e-mail regarding me from a clinic in my home town. This clinic does not exist and never has so the alarm bells went off straight away. When I checked on the Internet I came across a Panorama investigation into them years ago where they deliberately ignored TPS Rules. They need to be shut down. Next time they ring me I shall start off by telling them that the call is being recorded and see how long they stay on the line. They are a nuisance.
  • Seems a while since this one cropped up, however, received an out of the blue call from the Industrial Workers Office who wanted to ask questions about where I'd worked with the intention of "handout of industrial benefit owed". I suspect the call centre agent was fairly innocent - gave me his name fairly convincingly and also the phone number (0161 763 0075), which was withheld. I could be being naïve here!

My suspicions increased when told he was working for a Government Dept but couldn't say which. Further enquiries and he revealed he was working out of a private company's call centre in Blackburn (supposedly.) He couldn't tell me where their info came from ("I just work in the call centre") and clearly my registration with the Telephone Preference Service holds no sway with them.

So, keep an eye out for this revival.........

Received lots of calls from these cowboys in the last week. I was polite initially and asked them to remove my number from their list/database - but yet they kept ringing back. So when they rang for the third time in one day, I lost my temper. Queue a torrent of foul mouthed abuse from "Dougie" who then just laughed down the phone at me, and dared me to do anything about it.

Having heard that - then read this thread - the stories of their staff drinking and smoking dope doesn't surprise me in the least.

IMHO - just hang up on them. Don't be polite, don't engage, don't shout. They pay no attention to you, TPS or any other regulations, and they won't remove you from the list, so any conversation with them is a waste of your time and breath.

Just had a call 5-10 minutes ago (been browsing this thread).

Northern guy, gruff voice, said he was from the National Worker's Office. When I asked how they'd got my number (we're ex-directory), he said the national database. He called before just over a week ago, when I was short on patience and hung up, so I wasn't especially pleased to hear from him again. Kept banging on about the 'few questions' he had, so I hung up again.

Recorded the conversation from the moment I asked how he had my number. Not as annoying as the Indian guy who wants to hijack our computer.

    ..And another one.
Industrial Workers Office, called my landline, knew the home town.
    I'm ex-directory.
  • I have actually found these calls extemely distressing. I'm awaiting a number of urgent medical appointments and of course these come up as 'number withheld' on my mobile just like these jokers. So I HAVE to answer the phone ....The callers can be extremely rude. How can we stop them?
  • Foolishly I answered the house phone earlier this evening to be greeted by some 'guy' (I use the term loosely) I ended up calling him worse, but the gist is that he claimed he had info that I or someone in the house had been exposed to excessive levels of industrial noise. When he said that it was on their records I asked him that under the Freedom of Information Act, would he send me a copy of their records that sowed what information they held on me.

This only served to confuse this poor idiot on the other end of the phone.

So I asked if he knew that it was my legal right to have access to information they held on me under English law.

"Wot" he said, "You some kind of lawyer?" came the response.

"I have passed a law exam" I said

"Wot? You passed a law exam and your not a lawyer?"

I told him to ** Off. What I didn't tell him is that I have passed a law exam, I have a GSCE "A" level!

Please be aware. This is a scam that someone is trying to pull. If you have genuinely suffered hearing loss as a result of working in a noisy industry where protection wasn't adequately provided, there are better ways of seeking redress.

The more these people are exposed for the inefficient bunch of wasters they are (and that INCLUDES the 'poor' workers!) the better.

When I told the caller I had no way of knowing if he was who he said he was, and that he could be a foreign terrorist, he replied that indeed he could AND he had my address! Followed that up with a couple of 'expletive deleted' words and hung up.

No one should, for whatever reason, do business with people like that.

They will argue that TPS doesn't apply to them because they are not 'selling' anything. And, as they had both my and my wife's (not in any phone book) names, they must now be working from electoral registers.

It seems there is no one to 'complain' to regarding these people as they have developed a 'strategy' to work around data protection, TPS and legal rules.

The best way to fight them is stop people dealing with them

The next big campaign for Mr Lewis?
