Does your Secondary school aged child wear a coat to school?

I work in a large secondary school and I love seeing all the "littlies" (Year 7) in their brand spanking new uniforms and (mostly) eager faces in the first few weeks of the school year. :j Actually I love seeing the older ones in their scruffy old uniforms with their world-weary faces (not cool to be keen!;)) too.
Coats?? What are they?? :rotfl:[0 -
As for PE bags, where does he leave it?
You can't quite work out what he's telling you either. Whether he's grasped stuff or not. He told me that he's 1 of 20 from his class to go into a particular design and technology set. He told me quite proudly, but there's only about 28 in his class, so 20 are in this set and 8 aren't? Or does he mean 20 from his year? And they stream design and technology? Really? In year 7? It's as clear as mud!0 -
A lot of things will be streamed based on their year 6 SATS or the year 6 teacher assessment. Technology covered art, cooking, sewing, tehnical design, computer animation etc. and the class was split into various groups but not for streaming I don't think, just for the sake of jumbling the kids up I suppose. My son saw very few of his tutor group in his technology groups.
I don't think there was streaming for technology, but their history, geography, Re, drama and foreign language classes were based on their english grade. IT was based on maths grade. They were streamed for pretty much everything, according to their targets for the end of year 9. I think the only thing they did as a tutor group was PE and PHSE.52% tight0 -
I *think* he has to carry it around with him. The part of the PE kit that I ordered from the school was delivered to his 1st PE lesson, to go with the other non-school stuff (eg trainers) so he had a lot to carry that day and then he got collared by HT at home-time for standing waiting for his mates in the area that's for boarding buses only and had to walk all the way round. He was shaterred when he got in. Popping himself on said bus he was standing close to didn't occur to him! Oh I forgot to say he will def only be taking it on PE days and I WILL know when because I entered all his timetable onto a spreadsheet and saved it, and I've hi-lighted PE days in a diff colour!

My dd told me there are 6 classes in her year - her class 'joins' up with another class to form the 'sets' in which they work in - the classes are kind of paired
They have only been put into sets for Maths so far - dd is in top set at the mo so she is chuffed - It is nice that they get the opportunity to mix with other kids from a different class, she is sitting next to and has made friends with a girl from the other class already£608.98

That's unbelievable, but thanks for clearing that up for me!0 -

I never really knew what was happening unless somebody else told me. My son is unaware of the majority of what happens to him.
All schools will be different, but although we weren't told which sets they were in we do get a report each term (if child hands it over!!) with their expected grades and whether they are working on, above or below their target. It's like a report card each term, although comments are just a line or 2 for each subject.52% tight0 -

Mind you you could see if you can get involved in the PTA. I never did at Secondary, don't know if it would have helped. I know by the time DS3 left that I was telling colleagues with children at that school what they would be told at any information evenings they went to about trips, GCSE choices, sixth form etc. But whatever you're told, it won't necessary correlate to what actually happens!Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
He told me 'and I'm in the top technology set, there's only 20 out of my class in it' It just makes no sense. Was the streaming you talk about for things like RE and drama and french done in yr 7?

There's 8 classes that spell out the name of the school. I *think* that the 1st 4 classes and the last 4 form together for ability groups, but I'm going on this cos DS is sat to a child that's not in his form for English. I asked about this when DS weas doing transition days cos I was worried about him only having 1 boy out of his school in his class, but wasn't given an answer which compares to what DS says he's doing. You are so lucky having a girl as your eldest Sam. They seem to explain stuff a lot better than boys do. I only worked out how Junior school operated once DD got there, by which time DS was in the last year. :rotfl:
Yes she is a very good communicator - I already know all the gossip about her classmates
But still, she sometimes gets quite confused and gets it wrong - Hopefully there will be some sort of consultation evening in the first year were we can clarify all this 'sets' thing?!£608.98

I think it must be hugely uncool to wear a coat to secondary school. My lad would never wear a coat. Even if i had begged! The opposite of what you know...is also true0
