apoorstudent wrote:I do single honours English Lit., but with a module of Sociology (which I hate more than the English). There are bits of the course that ARE interesting. Like, 'Shrek'..! I enjoy the lectures, it's just the work that's the trouble. It's not difficult, it's just monotonous, hence I avoid it until the final moment.
If I leave then I have NOTHING. No plans. The only thing that I loved is the thing that I dropped at GCSE (art) because I despised the teacher. I've already wasted a year at A level, I don't think I could drop out and watse another year. I'd be 21 before I'm a fresher for the second time (I'd need time to think about the course I want to do). I'd rather suffer it, and have a degree at the end of it. Plus look at all the money I'd have wasted.
91 words done, and counting...
I know you are setting yourself up for hell. But I can see the money issues and age issues too.:beer:0 -
Hah, it's such crap. It makes me dizzy just thinking about it. I guess I have all summer to decide what I want to do... I definitely wouldn't be leaving until this year is over with. I want something to show for the £3000 I've paid so far. I get an HNC after 1-year, yeah?0

Just don't worry....the first year means absolutely NOTHING!!!
I completed my firt year with a 85% average, and got student of the year.
Now i look back, what did i get for my troubles? It doesnt help me get a job, doesn't go on my CV in a few years, and also doesnt count towards the classification of my degree.
My advice: Have fun! Get drunk, sleep around do whatever you want to do and stop worrying, work hard in the first year but enjoy the freshers year! the aim of the first year is to get rid of students that arent good enough and will get a poor degree, which will make the uni look bad. If you still do well enough to pass in the first year (However i know hundreds of people last year who didnt pass many of their exams) then work hard in the second year.
Remember you can always change subject at the end of the first year (May require you doing the first year again sometimes)
Hope this helps!0 -

^^I think I'll pass on that bit :P but yeah, I see what you mean. I don't know *why* I fret about it so much... It's just in my nature to get stressed out.
As for getting an HNC or whatever - that's good. That way I can look upon this degree in terms on three one-year courses, rather than a full three years.
//I'm now 260 words in... Hoorah, I got the ball rolling. 840 to go, 17hrs and 30 minutes to them in. I suddenly feel slightly less panicked!0 -
ilovecakes06 wrote:To the op, I feel exactly the same, I hate my course and feel like I have leant absolutely nothing this first term, the only thing I enjoy about uni is the social life. But if I drop out I don’t know what id do so I may as well stay and just hope I don’t fail my exams -but I really wouldn’t be surprised if I did as I don’t know anymore than I did when I started, im so worried im gonna get kicked out, I don’t even know where to start on my revision. Im just gonna stick with it, and if I fail, I fail, il decide then what im gonna do if that happens.
I'm adopting that attitude, too. I mean, failing & being screamed at by 'the ginger !!!!!' (as we all so kindly refer to her) is the worst that could happen. I wonder whether they refund your fees for the term if they kick you out before exams? :rotfl: At least that way, I'll have no choice but to get a job/go to a different uni. Somehow relying on external forces makes choices so much easier.0 -
Keep at it, the 2nd year seems to be the more interesting one in most degrees, as the 1st is usually used to get everyone up to the same level of knowledge and understanding.

^^Yeah, I've heard that too. At least we get to choose our modules.
Thankfully I managed to hand in my essay in with two hours to spare! This is amazing for me. But yeah, maybe I don't hate it that... maybe it's the anxiety created by deadlines that I hate.
Hmm... I dunno how I feel. I definitely don't want to leave until I am SURE about my decision!
EDIT: and yes, I do sometimes feel like the stuff we're doing is just a recap of A levels. It's not the level of work that's difficult... it's the amount of it, coupled with the sheer monotiny of it.0 -
