  • So why did they charge you?

It must have been put in the cage or box and didn't fit so it WAS too big, they don't charge for having bags that do fit.!!!!

Hold on there, Bob! You and I both know that some Ryanair checkin staff can be bloody obnoxious! My wife and dgtr and two friends were returning from Dublin recently and a checkin 'Lady' tried to charge 40 Euros for the crime of having a MAGAZINE on top of a holdall! She was so unpleasant that my dgtrs friend felt bullied into paying. That was until my dgtr took the magazine and put it into her own holdall. That was unacceptable to the checkin 'Lady'! It was resolved by calling for a supervisor who very reluctantly allowed them to board. And before you write that she should NOT have had a magazine on top of her bag, what about people that board Ryanair flights with small suitcases in the cabin and then struggle to fit them in the overhead lockers! Never seen that? I have many times!

Returning from Ibiza last June, I left two Polo shirts behind as they had faded and that meant I had less in my holdall. (I make SURE of the weight and the Correct size when I travel twice a year with Ryanair) and at the checkin at Ibiza airport, I was informed that I was overweight! I bloody well knew I wasn't and I took two shirts out and wore them at the desk! Problem solved but not a happy checkin 'Lady'.

I did notice that the OP wrote,
my bag was checked for its size on the way in & was fine & it had exactly the same amount of stuff in it on the way back!

Bob, give the OP a break and get off your charger!

This is very strange - i've never known such an argumentative forum! It was NOT too big.
Don't worry Electricblueeyes, it's only Bob the Saver ! Bob has a "thing" about 55x40x20 10kg and not a fraction more on Ryanair.

He's famous for it in these parts. Depending on what kind of day he's having you might get one sarky post that asks how difficult is it to understand 55x40x20 and 10kg or a whole rash of them like you did :p

Our Bob travels light and he saves himself a mint and gets entertained for free too ;) ... He's an MSE Travel forum regular, and his bark might be worse than his bite.

As for the rest of us, there's been a lot of complaints this year about the rudeness and the predatorial nature of some of the Ryanair baggage police - you have to be quite sneaky to get round their rules now and if they pick on you, you have to be particularly astute like NOT handing over your boarding card until you know they're going to let you through. Once your boarding card is in their possession then they've got you over a barrel. You might also still get challenged by the cabin crew if you appear to have two bags when you get on (I've seen it) although I have never seen the cabin crew actually charge someone for that I have seen them tell a passenger to put their woman's handbag into their main cabin bag. I think that must have been another case of bad-day-itis.

I saw a little old lady calmly walk away from them when she was challenged with similar nonsense. She said not a word, just found a comfortable corner and rearranged her bag.

If the complaint is about rude staff that's another matter, we all know what a reply from Ryanair would say (if one was sent). The basic point is the bag WAS too big (badly packed soft sided bag perhaps) and the OP got caught so have no grounds for complaint about that.
Anyway I'm off to Ireland (twice), England (thrice) & Germany (once) with Ryanair in the next few weeks and I'll keep you posted if I see people being charged for undersized bags!
I might even have a meal with my uncle Michael while I'm in Ireland.

PS. The OP did ask "What do you all think?"

Yes Bob, he did ask 'what do you all think' but it was about the money coming out of his account NOT the size of his BAG!

As a Dubliner myself, I'm embarrassed that your uncle Michael is Irish! I can see where some of his staff get the obnoxious behaviour from.

I thought about the size of the bag, I couldn't bare the thought of
thinking about money coming out of the bank
