Despite going on sale in Japan three weeks after the PS3, Nintendo's Wii outsold the PS3 in both companies' home territory by more than two to one, according to this story in the New York Times (login required), quoting Japanese estimates.
Enterbrain, a Tokyo-based video game magazine publisher, released sales estimates in Japan today that showed Sony fell far short of its goal of selling one million PlayStation 3 consoles here last year. Sony sold 534,336 units between their debut in Japan on Nov. 11 and Jan. 7, Enterbrain said. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. The issue is one of software and hardware.
Hardware wise the PS3 is more an adult purchase than a spur of the moment christmas present for your kids type thing.
Software wise. It's all well having 5gb storage but somebody has to programme 50gb of graphics and visuals at immense expense and still not necessarily produce a good game. That means the studios have to sell cross-platform to maximise their game concept, hence you lose the exclusives and why have super-duper graphics for the PS3 when the 360 visuals will do - after all, it's about development time, costs and sales.
I think Sony have shot themselves in the foot a little by being so ahead of their time. The games industry will need 10 years just to change it's current business model to accommodate lack of exclusives, a fragmented console market and ever growing development costs to seel across many consoles - don;t forget the Wii, PSP, DSLite and mobile phone versions of games too!.
360 is very much now and not a huge leap forwards, but that's how it should be. If we invented cars that ran on water tomorrow, industries would collapse and whole economies would need new foundations. Same with the PS3.Anger ruins joy, it steals the goodness of my mind. Forces me to say terrible things. Overcoming anger brings peace of mind, a mind without regret. If I overcome anger, I will be delightful and loved by everyone.0 -

They have an established fanbase of the various Sony only titles and if PS2 is anything to go by they will have a much more varied catalogue of games.
The only problem now though is that it takes longer to produce a game for the PS3 than it does for the 360. At the end of the day as the old saying goes "time is money" so we might not see as many varied games as your thinking. Also as someone else has already stated a big 'western' series namely GTA is no longer an exclusive title to Sony and will be releasing exclusive addon content over Xbox Live for GTA4. Another factor in this whole console wars aswell is that Sony have even said themselves they see the PS3 as more of a media centre than a games console.
Those that are waiting aswell for the PS3 release in March/April dont get your hopes up as Sony's head of Worldwide Studios Phil Harrison recently told Official PlayStation Magazine that he wouldn't like to make any definitive statements about the March rollout for PS3. Soooo anyway time will tell.0 -
ps3 will be bigger and better
sony will win as u can play ps2 games on it
and blu-ray costs a forture just on it own so its not a bad dealTreat everyday as your last one on earth! and one day you will be right.:D0 -

Worthy of note, however, that much as everyone likes to miss this point, the PS3 should perform slightly better than the 360 - this might not be an issue now, but as years go on and games get more complicated, the hardware differences might become more apparent.
Gawd - as the years go on?
There'll be a PS4 and an Xbox 1080 and the Wii will be replaced by a Woo by then! It's only worth buying for the here and now and right now, the PS3 is overpriced, overhyped and getting its butt kicked by the Wii and the 360.
Sorry Sony but IMHO you've added to your ever-growing list of !!!!-ups0 -

Why buy a PS3 to play PS2 games?
HDTV won't create the desire to upgrade that DVD did to VHS. It just ain't gonna happen! Blu-ray is gonna end up like all the other "better" Sony technologies - in the professional domain or in a museum:p0 -
If you look what happened in America in run up to christmas Ps3 sold 750,000 compared to 2million 360's and 1.8m Wii's (with shortage) and you could buy ps3's easily everywhere and buy them on Ebay at less than cost not long after launch.0

Also why buy a PS3 to play just blu-ray discs, when they will be releasing dual format players that support both HD-DVD and blu-ray????0 -

The only thing the PS3 beats the xbox360 on is floating point calculations, but most games only use about 10% of that. The raw power of the 360 hasnt even been touched and might not for the next 6 months or so. I saw a PS3 in the metro center today and the price tag on it without any games was £699  and the unit is HUGE, about the same size i would say as the biggets box of cornflakes. I anit gonna buy PS3 until i know whos gonna win teh blu-ray/HD dvd war.0
