Playstation 3 - How Much?

As this is a moneysaving site, unless you are a hardcore Playstation fan it is really not worth buying a PlayStation 3. It is far overpriced for what it offers in comparison to whats already in the market.
An Xbox 360 will give you High Definition gaming right out of the box, and a HD-DVD drive is available as an add-on which will play future HD games and HD-DVD movies. Coupled with the fact that X360 is already an established console and it has hundereds of titles available for it makes it the best buy between X360 and PS3.
Altogether, even if you buy the HD-DVD add-on as an extra this still costs less than the PS3 which as a console is no better and in most cases worse than the Xbox 360. Konami who are a major developer for PS3 have this week cancelled 5 games which were in development for it. The consoles are now sitting on shelves in Japan/US possibly because of the fact they are so overpriced and offer nothing new apart from the ability to play Blu-ray, a disc format which is currently the underdog in the DVD wars.
Then we get to the fun factor of gaming, the Nintendo Wii. This offers an entirely new and real gaming experience for anybody and everybody which is not based on tarting up visuals. Its always the gameplay which makes an enjoyable game and the Wii has absolutely bags of it thanks to its unique controller. Its the cheapest on the market and is definately the best bet to buy for most people (if you can find one) right now.
The fact that its not HD doesn't matter. Most people do not have HD capable TV sets, and those that do don't currently care enough to want to spend a fortune experiencing it right now. HD-TV will not be mainstream for at least another 5 - 10 years, by which time we will be in another generation of gaming so basically unless your a tech buff HD should be bottom of your list when buying a console.0 -

Never heard anything about an "ultimate" version and never heard *anything* about a £650 price point.
This version will not be available in the UK - its available elasewhere in the world though.Being bored is so boring Im bored of it... :rotfl:0 -
The £425 price tag is by no means confirmed. Word is that it'll be released at around the £370-90 mark. I'm sure Sony would like to reduce that further but with the loss they'd be making on each console as it is, they can't afford to.
For those still undecided as to whether to go with a 360 or a PS3, wait until March when Microsoft are expected to announce quite a drastic price drop in response to the new competition on the market.
And for those doubting the capabilities of the 360, check out Gears of War.0 -
When it comes down to it only one thing sells a console and thats its games and I think thats where PS3 will win in the end.
They have an established fanbase of the various Sony only titles and if PS2 is anything to go by they will have a much more varied catalogue of games.
I have no affiliation to either console but I'll go with a PS3 over an Xbox because I looked at the games on the Xbox and they all seem to be 3rd/1st person shooters, drive em ups or sports games (usually American sports). The simple reason for this is that Xbox's main market is the US and most games are made to target that market.
The PS3 on the other hand is huge in Japan, US and Europe which means the games are much more varied.
I think the Xbox will match anything graphically on the PS3, certainly in the early days. But even the 360's flagship title Gears of War while it looks stunning is really really dull! Run, hide, shoot, run, hide, shoot.0 -
Also worth mentioning the buzz surrounding the "zephyr". Apparently a 360 with HDMI and HDDVD out of the box. Would really take on the PS3 head to head then.
Worthy of note, however, that much as everyone likes to miss this point, the PS3 should perform slightly better than the 360 - this might not be an issue now, but as years go on and games get more complicated, the hardware differences might become more apparent.0 -
Andyblizz wrote:The estimate RRP of the 60Gb PS3 - is £425
The RRP price of an Xbox 360 Premium console and HD-DVD drive is £280 + £130 = £410.
Before anybody says you can get it cheaper. I am simply comparing like for like.
So it is PS3 @ £425 and Xbox 360 @ £410
Xbox 360 [Games Console] RRP £279 (Can be obtained for £225-ish if shopping around)
Xbox 360 HD DVD Drive [Optional] RRP £129
Personally I'd prefer the choice rather than having to be forced to buy into Sony's bluray movie format. (betamax vs VHS?)0 -

I'll dito that. Although i must say my 360 looks stunnig on my HD monitor compared to a normal TV set.
Moreover, the 360 is not asking you to buy the HD-DVD unless you want to, so for those who don't have a HDTV they can save themself £130
There is also rumours that a 360 re-release with HDDVD built in is on the cards but when and how much are anybodies guess.
Personally i don't care for sony much, lik-sang to name but one of many things consumers used to be able to enjoy but now cannot in Sony's pursuit of profit wealth maximisation.
I would also challenge any but the techiest of persons to actually spot the difference between HD and blu-ray.
Like everything SOny ever release you're paying for the name.
I really can't see how there will be any difference in quality between the two consoles, my bet is the titles are what will differ.
Bare in mind that teh 360 can also hook over teh network to your MCE, and with Vista on the way with MCE as standard the 360 wil become even more powerful. I currently stream TV, AVi, DIVX, music etc all from my pc to the xbox. no need for any clutter behind the tv simply your xbox and Tv0 -
I'm thinking of selling my PS3. There's just not much on it right now to justify me keeping it. Only had it for a week and have been playing Resistance, which is supposedly the best game on the console at the moment. Not very impressed by the game so far.0

I was all set to get a 360 prior to Christmas but I kept being put off by the wireless network adapter factor at an additional £50. That really is an extortionate sum for what I consider to be a fairly trivial item.
Lets hope prices fall in March.0
