to be honest i want new not 2nd hand laptop so i went for exchange. i came on here to try to figure out the best way of how to ask for discount due to the hassles and their mistake. they haven't offered anything yet so i thought i would point out the exchange is my right and that this was not likely a mistake so they broke the law too. i'd be more that happy with 10% but anything is down to them being nice not cos they particularly have too.0

Funny that, above is a quote from your original post. I thought you were looking to find a way to ensure they were "correctly punished" and "Compensation" not just a way to ask for a discount. My farts hospitalize small children0 -
both would be nice. waiting for consumer direct to call me back, all i can do is inform them and let them judge if this a rare occurrence or a regular thing0

When are you going to get the replacement?0

What if it wasn't a mistake and they've just been caught out, that's why he should be compensated and the shop be encouraged to be more honest.
Compensated for what? The loss they've suffered because of this... which is what?
I agree that trading standards should be notified in case there is a history of this shop doing this, but by and large I think this is going to be an honest mistake rather than a global terrorist conspiracy to undermine civilisation by turning new computers on prior to their purchase. If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything0 -
could be a one off but when you walk into a shop the size of a warehouse stuffed to gills of running display models you got to wonder were this stuff ends up? plus thats 1 of many shops in the chain.
Don't think this is global terrorist conspiracy as put by robertoMoir
By compensation i have always just ment a good will gesture, small discount / store credit.0 -
You should only be compensated for any actual losses you have incurred (which is nothing).
The rest is just pot-luck and depends on the company / person in the company that deals with you.Thinking critically since 1996....0 -
You can't expect to receive a discount and see them punished. Why are they going to reward you for getting them fined?0

They usually have a discount label on the price tag of the display model 'display model now £x'.
I've seen it many times in these stores.0
