But schools and workplaces sometimes use third party filtering software that sometimes filters sites for it's own political ends.

http://www.peacefire.org/info/why.shtml gives reasons why many view this censorship as wrong

I've just looked at that URL and having problems finding any facts ? The Only enterprise stuff I've run isn't 'set & forget'. If someone needed access to one of those false positive site then it was just a Helpdesk call ( and business justification) away.

You are also missing the point that use of content filters is often in a firms Acceptable IT usage policy. Bypass that ( and you will be caught , its not 'IF' , its 'WHEN' ) and not only will you encurr the wrath of your Sysadmin , you stand to loose your job.

    I can see MK's point.

To be honest unless you have a specific need, you don't really need to hide your ip address.

You will always be trackable to a certain extent (before it becomes overly complex), but to most websites you're just a number, and as mentioned a lot of people are on dynamic ip's.

I wouldn't necessarily say it's a bad thing or you'd be associated with anything (although on the outlook people may ask what you have to hide). It'll just provide a slower and less responsive connection as you have to go through more hops (which may not be the fatest either), so an inconvenience if anything. For the average joe, it's not something you really need to do.

    Hi Thomas

If you wanna hide/cover your IP its upto you as you pay for your internet connection and you have paid for your PC so its upto you how you want to surf and for people to say oh its illegal, thats crap you do what you want to do as long as you take respeonsibilty for any actions you undertake.

Now if you have been barred from a site for some reason dont go back just use another site or something, and also IP covering software is rubbish it masks your IP by bumping from server to server and by the time your packets of info get to the the site you want it usually means you wont get site access anyway because of such a naff IP signal so expect Page Cannot be Displayed a lot of times.

Now if its to get to watch the next series of lost from abc then you go ahead as its free in the states but not here and they are only the episodes that have been already shown, and before anyone gets on the illegal bandwagon just ask yourself when was the last illegal download you did.

At the end of the day it really isnt worth it.

What i said is that its usually used for illegal things and asked the op what he wanted to use it for.

Learn to read before you flame other users. Im simply giving both sides of a debate.

  • This is a crazy post all the way through - since when did this site prompt for the moral viewpoints of posters in judging people....? If the OP wants to hide their IP address and people know how to do it, then they have a choice to make - either provide the information or not respond at all. There are hundreds of proxy relay servers out there, most of which don't maintain logs for more than 5 minutes. A quick google search http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=proxy+servers+anonymous&meta= gives plenty of information.
