Has anyone here tested their TalkTalk connection speed to see what speed you're actually getting?

There are dozens of online speed checkers you can use. If you Google for "online speed checker" you'll find them. A reliable on is on http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest.html

I'm not on TalkTalk but I typically get 650-700 kb/s downloads which is pretty close.

If you have an 'always-on' router, it's a good idea to reboot and wait 20 minutes if you consistently get slow download speeds.

I'm currently getting 0mb/s That's because I haven't been able to connect to TalkTalk broadband since I had it installed several weeks ago...

Think you have a problem.
Don't think you'll get much speed if you can't connect.

disconnecting too often in a short space of time, whether doing it yourself or because of line problems causes the exchange to think you have a problem and it can lower your speed. if you find your speed at different times of the day is consistently low (2mb or less) this could have happened.

Just as a futher explanation of 'speeds up to 8Mb' because I think that some people sometimes see this phrase as meaning speeds of 8Mb...which isn't quite right.

When you apply for broadband at 'speeds up to 8Mb' the speeds that you'll get will depend on a few factors. Namely; the physical length of your phone line from the Exchange to your premises and your internal wiring. Edit: Please note that when you run a BT test where it indicates what speed you should expect on 'speeds up to 8Mb' this is not a true test. This test measures the physical distance between your home and the exchange and not the length of the phone line running between the two points.

The majority of people on products that advertise 'speeds up to 8Mb' will achieve a stable speed less than 8Mb. The speed breakdown estimate for customers across the UK who are with an Internet Service Provider who offers speeds up to 8Mb is:

40% of customers will get a connection speed that is above 6Mb
35% get between 4Mb and 6Mb
15% get between 2Mb and 4Mb
10% get a connection speed of up to 2Mb

For Maygar who says that they're getting speeds of 650-700Kbps, this is quite possible on speeds of up to 8Mb if they're quite a distance from the local exchange.

Because speeds up to 8Mb are so sensitive to internal wiring if you do want to maximise your speeds ensure that you're connecting from the master socket and that you've got a microfilter fitted to every phone socket that is in use.

I've only moved once from BT to TalkTalk...but I can't connect to the internet via TalkTalk...which is why I'm considering moving to another company

I'm getting 4.2 mb/s with BT Homehub (advertised as "up to 8"!), but this is via wireless, and I know it's faster when I actually plug it in!

Yeah, perfectly happy with what I get. When the initial line check was done, I was told it would actually be slightly under 8 Mb

Are the figures being confused, 650-700Kb/s is low.
Do you mean 6.5-7Mb/s (same as 6500-7000Kb/s) ??
