until ALL windows updates are completed, don't worry about the "slowness"....from probably a max of SP2 on your factory reset, you've got shedloads of updates to do. Turn OFF auto-updates, do it manually, and do them all before tackling the way it's running....and don't forget .NET framework updates, usually under Custom (optional) through win update.....
Your setup should be at least as fast as mine (Semperon 3000+, 2GB RAM), if not a touch faster, but you need to tackle a full rebuild in the correct order to get the best end result
was flying before this courtesy of advice on here. now when you say tackle in the right order do I have to do anything other than switch off the updating, do manually and be patient?

ps my cpu usage flickering from 5% 100% lots of noise from the computer but I can't see what it is working on the noise like its doing updates, but there is nothing showing in the task bar icon.0

have a look at processes in task manager, to see which process is using the cpu the most. Could be windows update, which should settle down after a few updates/reboots.
There are a few things in the log that could be disabled using msconfig, but can't see anything obvious responsible for the speed.

when I do a rebuild like this, I do NOTHING other than update-reboot-recheck for updates-update....it's faster in the long run, and you KNOW it's updating and be patient ......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......

Very Merry Christmas all, Guess its time to get back to the computer tinkering.
Well it would seem that I shouldn't be allowed to touch the computer as am a complete dunce:o The Epic hijack continues, it would seem I did not do a complete factory restore but a windows only restore (or something like that) caused no ends of software probs but managed the complete restore this time (I think and would seem to be back on the straight and narrow).
Would be grateful if you could give the log a look and let me know what I can get rid of. Currently not having any problems but I will be leaving the computer with my parents and want to have it in the best shape possible. Thanks.
