    as gunjack says, more ram won't make any difference, and mbam 14 day trial if you accepted it may slow things down, the standalone scanner wont

    follow the guide re ctfmom, google software will either be in c:\windows\tasks or add/remove programs or services.msc

  • Think That is everything done, Any advice re my disc drive? Dvd's definitely distorted. I have tried several and they are the same. can't say there is a lot of noise from the drive. This is the 2nd disc drive this machine has had. you could hear the knocking in the first one.

    Would I be better off just looking for a new a machine?

    Thank you for advice re ram, no sense in throwing money away! :)

    dvd sound is distorted? playing with what software?

    see post 7 - new pc seems drastic.

    A new dvd drive can be had for £10-15, but I'd look at the software first, particularly itunes

    ie google itunes distorted sound or itunes slow ripping
    !!
    > . !!!! ----> .
  • I use WM Player for ripping 90% of the time. Itunes needed for ipod but rarely use it. Will bite the bullet and do the factory restore. (Suppose its about time I got my filing in order) Dvd distorted also when using Intervideo Windvd. I don't use this program is it ok to remove or handy to have?

    Thanks for that, possibly panicked a bit when drive was playing up. :D

    Any advice on what type of dvd drive (or best to avoid) and where best to get?

    Thanks for your help.

    before replacing it, try a lens cleaner cd in it (usually can get from pound shop) and making sure the drivers for it AND YOUR AUDIO CHIPS are up-to-date - this may not be achieveable through windows update, you may have to search for them on the manufacturer's website or even use some driver scanner software :)

    try backing up itunes and uninstalling it before factory restoring, and if that doesn't work, factory restore before buying a new drive. Also check the cabling is correct internally, especially slave/master/cable select.

  • Just a quick question slimsia, is the sound ok say on Youtube or iPlayer? It could be the speakers/amp/sound card.....Mind you as you have been ripping I guess you have tried the file from your pc.

    until ALL windows updates are completed, don't worry about the "slowness"....from probably a max of SP2 on your factory reset, you've got shedloads of updates to do. Turn OFF auto-updates, do it manually, and do them all before tackling the way it's running....and don't forget .NET framework updates, usually under Custom (optional) through win update.....

    Your setup should be at least as fast as mine (Semperon 3000+, 2GB RAM), if not a touch faster, but you need to tackle a full rebuild in the correct order to get the best end result :)
