Perhaps the thought of prosecution, and a £1,000 fine, will help you make up your mind?...

There is such a thing as 'anonymous registration' - which I believe gives you the right to vote without actually having you name on the register. But you have to a really good reason to qualify and have supporting evidence such as court order. Whether that is of any relevacne I don't know.

    The wording is as follows...
It is an offence to give false information when completing this form.

I declare that, as far as I know, the details on this form are true and accurate .
At least that's what it says on mine.
  • Thanks, yes, I don't want to do anything that isn't legal, (obviously!) so if my friend wants to stay off it it looks like she will have to make her case for anonymity. I had thought previously that the worst that could happen to me if I stayed off it was that I couldn't get credit, but it looks like in the worst case scenario it could be a lot worse.

You can jsut register yourself if you want too.

    I'm not sure that's true.

The person signing the form has to sign to say that the information is accurate, which it clearly wouldn't be, and therefore almost certainly an offence. Unlikely to be prosecuted but still an offence.

It's not up to the OP to assist anyone else who wishes to break the law by refusing to register.

There should be a box on the far right which you mark X to opt out of the edited register (this is the one available for general sale).

  • millions of people aren't on the electoral register either for reasons of avoidance ie people with debts who don't want to be found or just through lack of interest in the political system we have. upto 4 million people according to some estimates.

Yorkshireboy does have a valid point but i wonder how many of those missing millions are in households where other people are registered ?

I'm not trying to go against the consensus you should never willingly sign something that is false but i'm sure you wouldn't be alone in doing this. either way its upto you if i was you i'd try to persuade your friend to sign up to if its that important to you.

It is in Northern Ireland. And will be in the rest of the UK when individual registration is extended.

That would not stop information being passed to CRAs, AFAIK.

There are all sorts of people who opt out of the edited register (prison officer, police officers, abused domestic parters, etc.) but they can still get credit!
