Electoral Register

Hi,
I hope everyone is having a good evening - can I ask a question please? I'm not sure if anyone can help with this, but I would like to ask if anyone knows whether I can register myself as living at a property on the electoral role, but not my flat mate, who does live with me, but doesn't want to be registered. I am concerned that I won't be able to get credit if I don't register, but I don't want to commit fraud by leaving her off the form.

Does anyone know whether I can just register myself - is it legal to do so? It's a long story as to why she doesn't want to register, but I don't see why I should be suffer!

thanks

Clare

I'd try and get my friend to register also.

The elecoral role is important because it enables people to vote (hopefully get out the Tories!).

Many people will not get credit if they have are not on the electoral role... as some institutions check electoral role first.

There's also the census, which your friend would be legally obliged to complete (next ones quite a way off though!).

I don't know why anyone would have an objection to being on it - but certainly don't disadvantage yourself.
  • Thanks, I thought it might be considered fraud not to declare other people living at the property, but then I did also think that perhaps people could choose whether to be on it or not - I think I'm worrying too much!

To aviod being traced for debt collection is normally the most common reason.

  • Hi raven83

In my situation, I will be signing and returning the form, but only with my name on it, not my flatmates, so there would be no reason for them to come back to me - just didn't know if that was legal!
  • Hi all,
Yes, I'm not happy about my friend being on it, but she has made the decision, for reasons that I respect as being personal to her, but I don't want to suffer as a result with getting credit. I agree with you all, why anyone wouldn't want to be on it is crazy to me - funny old world!!

Whats the reason your flat mate does not want to be on the register if you dont mind me asking?

Have you declared they live at property for council tax purposes? thats fraud if your claiming single persons discount if there are other people living at the property.
