Electoral Register

  • Hi stclair
Thanks for all your help - my flatmates reasons are to do with not being traced as without going into too much detail as it's quite personal, but she is making a new start and wants to remain anonymous. She is probably being a little paranoid, but it is her decision. We are both paying council tax though, and not claiming the discount, I wouldn't do that as I know that's not legal (or right!) It's just this issue with the electoral role that I've been baffled about.

    Hi raven83

In my situation, I will be signing and returning the form, but only with my name on it, not my flatmates, so there would be no reason for them to come back to me - just didn't know if that was legal!

hi, but if you don't want to be on it how do you avoid it as when ever i am late in sending mine off they turn up and i have to sign it there and then just curious how you could not sign it.

  • Yes, I know there must be lots of people who aren't on it for one reason or another. I guess it is just her loss really as she won't be able to vote or get credit - perhaps she will change her mind in the future.

You may live somewhere where the ruling party has trouble turning out its vote. Sometimes parties have trouble getting their potential supporters to go to the polls, but it's futile if they aren't even registered.

And of course anybody planning to stuff ballot boxes or commit postal-vote fraud needs to get a lot of people registered who aren't interested.

More charitably, your council may have a problem with men trying to avoid registering their wives.

But most councils don't seem to make any attempt at enforcement.

You will be signing a false declaration on the form if you fail to include your flatmate. Can't remember the exact wording but there's something there about completeness.

Whether that will have any adverse consequences is doubtful.

    The wording is as follows...
It is an offence to give false information on this form.

I declare that, as far as I know, the details on this form are true and correct.
  • I'd try and get my friend to register also.

The elecoral role is important because it enables people to vote (hopefully get out the Tories!).

Many people will not get credit if they have are not on the electoral role... as some institutions check electoral role first.

There's also the census, which your friend would be legally obliged to complete (next ones quite a way off though!).

I don't know why anyone would have an objection to being on it - but certainly don't disadvantage yourself.

Voting important? You know no matter who you vote everything they bring in is always !!!!!!.
BTW tell your friend to keep off the Electoral roll shall she wish to. I went on and i wont be doing it again, got dragged 30 miles to crown court through it to be Jury. Not a good think considering i thought i was going on for normal things not to get dragged around the country deciding someone's fate.
  • Thanks Dzug1 and Yorkshire Boy - I'm now undecided as to what to do! It does seem unfair that I can't register just because someone I live with doesn't want to register. Does anyone know where I can find out where I stand legally?
