yes, that's the whole point of the exercise - it will be the same as it was when you bought it, so if you have any data you need to keep, back it up first to external hard disk/DVD etc.

If you have no data you want to backup, I suggest you try it and stop worrying, connected to net or not doesn't matter.

If anything goes disastrously wrong, use the recovery dvd instead.

Do you prefer 7 against vista?

the only reason I upgraded from vista to 7 was because I was able to get win7 pro for only £30, if I hadn't have been able to get it cheaper I wouldn't have bothered as I personally quite liked vista, I know you read a lot berating vista but after the diabolical experience I had with XP, vista 'just worked' and that's all I wanted.

another advantage with upgrading to win7 pro is that extended support ends in 2020 because (touch wood) I have absolutely no plans on buying any new computers any time soon, which is perfect as I only use it to surf the internet, play quake live and watch blu-rays, and for those tasks vista is exactly the same as 7.

UPDATE. HI Jayme et.al. Just to let you know I am up and running again, thanks to all your good advice. I really am grateful. I haven,t installed my backups, pictures yet, as i,m not really sure if I want all the stuff I backed up , back on.
I have got trouble installing my printer though, and wonder if it was this that, was the problem in the first place?
I have inserted and installed the installation disk, wouldn,t instal drivers etc, windows advised a couple of more updates, as if nearly 200 wasn,t enough to instal last night. This allowed the disk to update the drivers on my located printer, and said it was successful.
However, I cannot find it. it,s not in all programs or anywhere on my pc.
Bit of a puzzle on that one. Any advice would be grateful, could do with it. May have to invest in a new one, if I cannot get mine back on::
I now have my pc back and I think I will just instal things as I go and use them. Too much dross on over the years. Thanks again Everyone for your support, which, without, I could NOT have done it:beer: PS. I forgot how to stop the touchpad tapping, and changing the page when hovering. ????

Hi again Santer. thanks for reply. Yes it is in Printers, and when I plug it in usb, it says ready to use. So it is there, but not in programs.
It,s a Lexmark, x1180 all in one.I think it may be a new one, just bought loads of ink too. It,s playing up trying to turn off, malfuntioning. Just keeps trying over and over, till I switch it off at the mains. Don,t know if it,s because of instaltion disc?

According to this the driver has not been changed since 2008 so the one on the disc should be the same, however, you could try the one here

    http://www.siliconguide.com/drivers/device/84/

If that makes no difference, they have live chat, probably during the week only

Hi santer, just an update. Got all windows updates now. Tried your link regarding Lexmark and downloaded 2nd one. IT took me all the way through the instal, diagnoesed my ink cartridges correctly, printed 2 test pages, installed drivers, got to the end, I didn,t fill in reg form, thought I,d skip it. finished ok.
Alas, it,s al there on system. but when I click on icon or progam, error ; link failed. cannot find drivers. drivers didn,t instal correctly, even though I saved the downloaded the new ones and had windows download same and use them, but no good..I,m going to keep at it again, see if I can succeed today.

CAN I just put my pictures on the back up I did, or do I have to put all the back up data on??? Can I select what I want put back on ??
